SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team will travel to California to face Saint Mary's College in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Sunday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. PT. Radio is available at KALL 700 AM.
Utah is 3-6 all-time in four appearances in the WNIT. The Utes last appearance in the tournament was in 2007, when Utah beat Montana, 78-70 in the first round before falling to Illinois in the second round, 59-48.
The Utes are coming off a strong performance at the Mountain West Conference Tournament, winning three games before falling in the championship game in overtime. Kalee Whipple and Taryn Wicijowski were both named to the all-tournament team. Whipple averaged a double-double for the tournament (12.5 points, 11.3 rebounds) and Wicijowski scored 18.5 points per game. Halie Sawyer pulled down 9.8 rebounds per game with 10.5 points per game and had 10 blocks.
St. Mary's is 21-9 overall and finished second in the West Coast Conference with a 12-2 record. The Gaels were upset in the conference tournament semifinals by Pepperdine, 62-56. Louella Tomlinson leads the team with 17 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. An All-WCC first-team selection, she was also named as the WCC Defender of the Year. Jontell Smith was also named to the first team. She is averaging 13.3 points per game. Utah is 4-0 all-time against Saint Mary's College.
The last meeting between the two teams was in 2007-08, with the Utes coming away with an 85-59 win in Salt Lake City.
