SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team returns to the state on Wednesday to face off with rival Brigham Young on Wednesday, Jan. 12. The game will be televised live by BYU-TV, to re-air on The Mtn. on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 8:00 p.m. MT.
Utah is on a five-game winning streak after defeating San Diego State in overtime, 70-67, in its last game. Iwalani Rodrigues scored 27 points to lead the Utes, her fifth 20-plus point game this season. Michelle Plouffe scored 18 points with a team-high 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year. Janita Badon was also in double-figure scoring with 15 points.
Badon earned MWC Player of the Week honors for her efforts against Air Force and San Diego State last week.
Brigham Young has also started its MWC campaign 2-0 after defeating UNLV and Air Force last week. The Cougars are 10-6 overall. BYU has an experienced team, led by senior Mindy Bonham with 11.8 points per game.
Utah leads the all-time series, 61-33, but BYU won both meetings last year.
"They are a very talented, senior-laden team," Utah interim head coach Anthony Levrets said. "They present problems on both ends of the floor. This game is going to be a very good test for our young girls."
The winner of Wednesday's game between BYU and Utah earns five points in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series between Utah and BYU. Utah leads the Duel, 16-6, after four events. Utah has wins in volleyball and football with BYU garnering points from women's soccer. Tuesday's men's basketball game is also worth five points.
