SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team faces off with Mountain West Conference leader TCU on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. The game will be televised live in CBS College Sports.
Utah will hold the inaugural Power of Pink Awareness Walk in support of cancer research and survivors, beginning at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at 4:00 p.m. The first 200 fans will receive a free pink t-shirt, while all fans wearing pink receive free admission to the game.
The Utes (10-9, 3-2 MWC) are coming off a thrilling 56-53 win over New Mexico in The Pit. Michelle Plouffe had her conference-leading seventh double-double of the year with 13 points and 12 rebounds. She pulled down two defensive rebounds and made two free-throws in the final seconds to clinch the win for the Utes.
One of the most important stats for Utah on Wednesday was rebounding. After struggling with rebounding against BYU and Wyoming, Utah out-rebounded New Mexico, 43-30.
"A huge key for us is rebounding," interim head coach Anthony Levrets said. "We are 10-1 when we out-rebound our opponent. We need to continue to improve at both ends of the floor, but the most important thing is preventing second shots."
TCU (13-6, 5-0 MWC) is the only remaining undefeated team in MWC play after knocking off Brigham Young, 54-51, on Wednesday. The Horned Frogs are on a seven-game winning streak and have won eight of their last nine games.
TCU is led by seniors Helena Sverrisdottir and Emily Carter. Sverrisdottir is the reigning MWC Player of the Year while Carter leads the league with an 18.9 points per game scoring average.
"TCU is very talented," Levrets said. "They have good seniors to go with talented young players, and they play very well together."
Utah leads the overall series against TCU, 9-7. Last year, TCU won both meetings in the regular season, including a four-overtime thriller in Salt Lake City that saw Utah's Kalee Whipple set conference and school records for scoring (45 points). However, Utah was victorious against the No. 1-seeded Horned Frogs in the MWC Tournament later that year, 69-57.
