FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Michelle Plouffe tallied 17 points and tied her career high with 14 rebounds as the Utah women's basketball team struggled to make shots down the stretch and fell to Arkansas, 57-56 on Sunday afternoon.
The Utes led by as many as nine points early in the second half, 44-35 with 16:25 left. However, the Utah shooting went cold and Arkansas got back in the game over the next four minutes with eight points to cut that lead back to one, 44-43 with 12 minutes left. Although Plouffe stopped the drought with a key three-pointer, Lindsay Harris hit two free throw shots after being fouled on the other end to keep the score within two, 47-45.
The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes. Arkansas took their first lead since early in the game on a jumper by Dominique Robinson with 8:45 left, 50-49. After back-to-back baskets by each team, a key three-pointer from Rachel Messer with just over seven minutes left gave Utah another two-point lead, 54-52.
A timeout and three alternating possessions later, Taryn Wicijowski hit a jumper to give the Utes a four-point lead, 56-52 with five minutes left. However, it was the final basket that the Utes would make in the game, going 0-for-4 from the floor and 0-for-2 from the charity stripe through the final minutes.
Arkansas cut the lead to two on a Robinson put-back, and Sarah Watkins' three with just over two minutes remaining gave the Razorbacks a one-point lead they would not relinquish.
With 44 seconds remaining after a Utah timeout, Plouffe was called for a charge on a layup play. Iwalani Rodrigues also missed a three with four seconds remaining.
"The big key in this game was us not finishing possessions defensively," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "You hold a team to 36 percent shooting from the field on the road, and you shoot 44 percent on the road, you feel like you should walk out with a win most nights. But it's not always that first shot that gets you. They got 14 offensive rebounds, nine of them in the second half and several of them in the last seven minutes. We did not finish enough plays to get separation and they took advantage of those second chances.
"I thought we had a couple of good shots, I just thought we missed them. I thought we executed a couple of plays really well. There was the offensive foul call at the end of the game that we executed perfectly and we just got a foul called. But you can't allow those things to be why you lose a game."
Wicijowski was also in double-figure scoring with 15 points. Rodrigues scored eight points while Messer tallied seven.
Utah led at halftime, 35-30. The Utes scored 20 points in the paint during the first half, led by 10 points from Plouffe.
The Utes return to the court on Friday, Nov. 25, against Detroit at the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic.
