SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team opens the 2011-12 campaign against in-state rival Southern Utah on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 3:00 p.m. MT. Radio is available at ESPN 700 with a live video feed available through UtahUtes.com.
"This is a very important game for us," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "Anytime you open the season you want to play well, and anytime you play someone in-state you want to play well. This is a big game because of the in-state rivalry, and because in the first game of the season it's important to come out and do the things well that we have been working on in practice.
"I want to see our team execute at both ends of the floor. For us to be good at the end of the season we must be able to execute in the half court both offensively and defensively to win tough conference games. The focal point early in the season is getting better every single day at those things."
Utah is coming off of a 76-54 exhibition against Dixie State. The Utes were paced by double-doubles from sophomore forward Michelle Plouffe and redshirt sophomore forward Taryn Wicijowski. Plouffe finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Wicijowski posted 18 points and 12 boards. The Ute defense held the Red Storm scoreless for more than five minutes to start the game, and took a 38-14 lead into halftime. The Utes collected as many rebounds in the game as Dixie State had points, beating the Red Storm on the glass, 54-31, including 14 offensive boards.
Southern Utah returns two starters from last year's team that went 16-14 and finished fifth in the Summit League. Desiree Jackson, who was selected to the 2010-11 Summit League All-Newcomer team, had 9.4 points per game last season.
The Thunderbirds won both of their preseason contests, downing Dixie State 76-66 and Adams State, 72-52.
"Southern Utah does a really good job of pushing the ball up the floor in transition," Levrets said. "They will test our discipline in our transition defense early in the season."
