FORT WORTH, Texas - Despite a late rally, the Utah women's basketball team fell to TCU in Fort Worth on Tuesday evening, 71-60.
Utah was led by 19 points from Iwalani Rodrigues while Michelle Plouffe had 17 points. Janita Badon was also in double figure scoring with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Both teams scored at will early in the first half, with shooting percentages hovering around 70-percent for both squads. Rodrigues scored eight of Utah's first 12 points, while Helena Sverrisdottir had 11 points for TCU in the first five minutes.
The score was tied five times in the first ten minutes. With TCU holding a 26-25 lead after a Plouffe jumper with 9:30 left, Utah fell into a scoring drought through the next eight minutes, over which the Horned Frogs took a 37-25 lead on an 11-0 run.
TCU led 39-27 at halftime. The Horned Frogs' 39 points are the most Utah has allowed in the first half this season.
Although TCU pulled out to as much as a 17-point lead in the second half, Utah made a late run to pull within five points in the final minutes.
Down by 16 points with 7:30 left, 57-41, Utah began what ended up being a 19-8 scoring drive to cut the lead to five points. Plouffe hit a free-throw to start the rally, followed by a layup and two free throws from Badon. Rodrigues hit the next three baskets for the Utes, all three's, and TCU was only able to answer with two, two-point buckets and a free-throw. Rodrigues' third three brought Utah to within seven, 62-55 with 2:30 left.
TCU's Emily Carter attempted to stop the Utah rally with a three of her own before the Utes reeled off five-straight points to bring the score within five points, 65-60 with two minutes left. Badon again made two free throws in the run, and her steal at half court on the TCU possession for a fast break layup put the Utes in reach of the lead.
Sverrisdottir hit six-straight free throws in the final minute and a half to again pull TCU ahead by double digits while Utah was held scoreless down the stretch.
The Utes outscored TCU overall in the second half, 33-32. Badon had 10 points and seven rebounds in the half.
TCU was led by Sverrisdottir's 23 points, while Starr Crawford had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
"I am really proud of how hard we played in the second half and how well we executed on offense," interim head coach Anthony Levrets said. "Unfortunately we gave a really good offensive team too many open shots and they are good enough to capitalize on every one of them."
Utah has a bye this coming weekend. The team returns to the court for their final home game of the regular season against Colorado State on March 2.
