SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team opens a two-game homestand against San Diego State on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The first 100 fans will receive a free Utah fan sign.
"This is a really important week for us," interim head coach Anthony Levrets said. "San Diego State is a very talented basketball team. We played a very close game with them earlier this year and felt fortunate to get a win.
"We are playing very well defensively and our offense is beginning to catch up. If our improvement at the offensive end continues, we still have a chance to do some special things."
Utah (12-11, 5-4 MWC) is coming off a 55-40 victory over Air Force. Michelle Plouffe and Iwalani Rodrigues each scored 20 points to lead the Utes in the victory while the defense held the Falcons scoreless over long stretches of the game.
Plouffe, who also scored a career-high 30 points against UNLV earlier in the week, was selected as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week. She is the second Ute to earn Player of the Week honors this season. Janita Badon has earned the award twice.
San Diego State is 8-13 on the year and 2-7 in conference play. The Aztecs have struggled as of late, dropping their last five contests, all by 11 points or less.
Utah defeated the Aztecs in their first meeting in San Diego on Jan. 8, 70-67, in a wild overtime game. The contest featured large momentum swings for both teams throughout. Rodrigues scored 27 points to lead the Utes in the game. Badon tallied 15 points, including two game-clinching free throws in the final seconds. Courtney Clements led SDSU with 29 points.
