Utah Drops 7-0 Decision to California

BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (2-4) fell to No. 18 California (3-2) by a score of 7-0, Wednesday at the Don and Ethel McLeod Tennis Complex.

The Utes struggled in doubles play, giving the Golden Bears their 1-0 start. Junior Benito Suriano and freshman Matt Cowley were defeated by Carlos Cueto and Ben McLachlan at the No. 2 spot, 8-3. At the first position, the freshmen duo of Devin Lane and Alejandro Medinilla dropped an 8-6 match to Sky Lovill and Pedro Zerbini. Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov and Brad Weaver were topped by Riki McLachlan and Tommie Murphy, 8-3.

In singles play, Suriano fell 6-1, 6-2, to Pedro Zerbini at the No 1 position, putting California up 2-0.

Lane suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Bozhidar Katsarov at the No. 4 slot, while Weaver fell to Sky Lovill, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 position, sealing the match for California, 4-0.

California extended their victory when Medinilla dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Ben McLachlan at the No. 3 spot. Cowley was downed by No. 120 Riki McLachlan at the fifth position. Mamedov was unable to overcome his opponent, No. 59-ranked Cueto at the No. 2 slot, falling 7-6(5), 6-4.

The Utes will return home to host Montana State, Friday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m., and Portland State, Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m., at the Eccles Tennis Center.
