SALT LAKE CITY - A late rally by San Diego State lifted the Aztecs over the Utah women's basketball team, 50-49, on Wednesday evening.
After holding a nine-point lead at halftime, 26-17, Utah pulled out to as much as a 10-point lead in the second half, but San Diego State kept the Utes within their sights. With Utah up by eight, 43-35 with 8:30 remaining, SDSU went on a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to come within two, 43-41.
The two teams traded baskets over the final minutes. Utah would make its shots to go up by three, before SDSU would respond at the other end of the floor to push the lead back to a point. Utah held a one-point lead, 49-48, with 2:30 remaining before the teams launched into a defensive battle down the stretch.
The decisive point came with 24 seconds remaining, when Janita Badon fouled Sajoyia Griffin on a mid-court play. Griffin made both of her free throws to give SDSU its first lead of the second half, 50-49.
Utah took a timeout with nine seconds remaining, but the heavily guarded shot on the ensuing possession was wide of its mark.
Four players were in double figures, led by 13 points from Iwalani Rodrigues. She also had a career-high four steals. Michelle Harrison, Michelle Plouffe and Diana Rolniak all had six rebounds.
Both teams struggled at the free-throw line, with Utah going 6-for-13 and San Diego State 8-for-19. The Utes capitalized on 21 SDSU turnovers for 14 points, but were out-rebounded, 44-33.
Paris Johnson scored 12 points with 11 rebounds and four blocks for SDSU.
Both teams struggled to score early in the first half. San Diego State held a three-point lead, 13-10, with seven minutes remaining before Utah found its rhythm late in the half to go on a 16-4 run through the remainder of the half. Utah held a nine-point lead at halftime, 26-17. Harrison had 10 points to lead the Utes at the half.
Utah returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 9, against in-state rival Brigham Young.
