Utes Open MWC Tournament With 55-44 Win Over UNLV
Strong Second Half Lifts Utes to 70-55 Win over Air Force at MWC Tournament
LAS VEGAS - The Utah women's basketball team has rolled into the semifinals at the Mountain West Conference Tournament with wins over UNLV and Air Force in the first two rounds. The Utes now face No. 1 seeded Brigham Young on Friday, which will be playing its first game after a pair of byes in the early rounds. Friday's game tips at noon PT and will be televised live on The Mtn.
BYU is 23-7 this season, going 15-1 in the MWC. The Cougars only loss was to TCU on Jan. 19.
Although the Utes (16-16) dropped both games in the regular season to the Cougars, both games have been competitive. BYU pulled away midway through the second half for a 68-50 win in the first meeting. In the second game, BYU led by as many as 14 points in the second half before the Utes put together a second-half rally to come within four points with two minutes left. A misplay in the final seconds led to the 61-58 final score. It was one of the few close games BYU had played all year.
The Cougars have struggled to contain Michelle Plouffe and Janita Badon this season. Plouffe has scored at least 20 points in both meetings between the two teams, including a double-double in the first game, while Badon had 17 points in the first meeting with a double-double in game two.
Badon has had a stellar tournament for Utah, averaging 15.5 points and 12.5 rebounds through the first two games. She is leading all players at the tournament in total rebounds and average. Badon had a career-high 17 boards against UNLV as part of a double-double. Plouffe opened the MWC Tournament with a double-double against UNLV and is averaging 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds through the first two games. Other players who have stepped up during the tournament include Michelle Harrison, who had a season-high 15 points against Air Force.
BYU has won the last four meetings between the two teams. Utah leads the overall series, 63-33.
