Women's Basketball Ready For Road Trip to Arizona and Arizona State
Last Time Out
For the second time this season, the Utah women's basketball team came away victorious in overtime in Pac-12 play, defeating Arizona, 65-60 on Thursday evening.
In a tight second half that featured six ties and four lead changes and came down to the wire, the Utes (9-8, 2-4 Pac-12) were buoyed in the final minutes by Rachel Messer, who hit two three-pointers to put the Utes in the lead, 54-51.
After a timeout, the Wildcats Davellyn Whyte answered with her own three to again tie the game with 23 seconds left. The Utes could not get off a clean shot as the buzzer sounded.
Utah outscored Arizona 11-6 in overtime. Badon, who led Utah in scoring with 22 points, scored eight points in the extra stanza. After taking a four-point lead following layups from Badon and Taryn Wicijowski, Arizona was forced into fouling in the final seconds, and the Utes hit their free throws to clinch the win.
Wicijowski and Plouffe each had double-doubles, Wicijowski with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Plouffe with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Arizona State Update
Kimberly Brandon scored 20 points and Arizona State ran up a 33-point halftime lead in defeating Colorado 64-43 on Thursday.
Arizona State scored the game's first 12 points before Jasmine Sborov got Colorado on the board with a free throw after 8:17 had elapsed. The Sun Devils increased their lead to 27-9 with 5:11 left in the first half, then clicked off the final 15 points for a 42-9 lead at intermission.
Arizona State shot 46 percent (25-of-55), made 4-of-8 3-pointers and hit all 10 free throws.
News and Notes
? Utah's two Pac-12 wins have both come in overtime. In addition to the Arizona win, the Utes defeated Washington in overtime, 49-36.
? Utah (53.2) and Arizona State (52.2) rank second and first respectively in the Pac-12 in scoring defense.
? Janita Badon scored a season-high 22 points against Arizona.
? Badon continues to lead the Pac-12 in assists (5.4). She had five against Arizona.
? Michelle Plouffe had her seventh double-double of the year against Arizona with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She is tied for second in the Pac-12 in double doubles.
? Taryn Wicijowski recorded her fifth double-double of the season against Arizona. She had a season-high 13 rebounds to go with 16 points vs. the Wildcats.
? Plouffe and Wicijowski are tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in rebounding (8.4).
? Utah has three players ranked in the top 10 in the conference in defensive rebounds - Plouffe (6.2), Wicijowski (5.9) and Badon (5.1).
