TORONTO - Utah women's basketball player Michelle Plouffe and former players Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn have been selected to the Canada Basketball Senior Women's National Team to participate in the 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women.
Canada will be looking to earn a berth to the 2012 Olympics at the tournament, held in Ankara, Turkey, from June 25-July 1. Canada opens the tournament against Mali on June 25th before taking on France on June 26 to complete group play. The quarterfinals begin on June 29th.
In order to qualify for the Olympics, Canada will need to place in the top two in its three-team group, and win its quarterfinal game.
Before the tournament, Canada will play two exhibition games in Scotland against Great Britain and travel to France for an exhibition tournament against Croatia, Czech Republic and France.
Plouffe was an honorable mention AP All-American last season, ranking in the top 10 in the Pac-12 in both scoring and rebounding. Smith and Thorburn, who both earned All-America honors during their time at Utah, helped lead the Utes to an Elite Eight appearance in 2006.
