LONDON - In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Canada Senior Women's National Team defeated host country Great Britain, 73-65, on Monday evening for its first victory in the 2012 Olympics.
Shona Thorburn led all scorers with 18 points. Kim Smith scored 11 and had four blocked shots. Michelle Plouffe did not play.
The game came down to the final minutes, with Thorburn and Smith each hitting big shots to help pull Canada away at the end. Great Britain led 61-57 with six minutes remaining before Canada closed the game with a 16-4 run to take the victory.
Canada is 1-1 in London, falling in a close game to Russia in its Olympic opener on Saturday. The Canadians continue in Group B play on Wednesday, August 1, against France.
