2014-15 University of Utah Women's Basketball Season Preview: Front Court
Junior point guard Danielle Rodriguez will direct the Utah offense at point guard. Experience is on her side as she has made 66 starts in 67 appearances in her first two years as a Ute. Last season, Rodriguez was third in the Pac-12 with 4.3 assists per game this season and ranked fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9, 133-71).
"Dani has had the experience of starting as a freshman on a team that won 23 games and made it to the championship game of the WNIT, but also the tough year last season," Utah Head Coach Anthony Levrets said. "She's been on both ends of the spectrum. She's started 66 games going into her junior year, you can't replace that experience. She's really grown as a player and grown into a leadership role. She's also physically developing, getting a little bit stronger. She's really worked on her game and I expect her to have a really good season."
Senior Cheyenne Wilson is coming off a successful shooting season in 2013-14, where she finished eighth in the conference with a .383 (44-115) clip from 3-point territory and was 15th with 1.4 3's per game. In league games, she was 12th with a .379 (25-66) mark from distance.
"Cheyenne has really worked on her game and is in the best shape of her life," Levrets said. "She had a really good year shooting the basketball last season. I expect her to continue doing that, making open shots, making good decisions with the ball in her hands as secondary ball-handler, being a leader for us on the floor and then also being a lock-down wing defender."
Crozon was sidelined for all of last season, but comes back for her sophomore season aft er playing in 30 games with 10 starts and averaging 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 16.4 minutes per game in 2012-13.
"Paige is another one of those multi-dimensional kids with the ability to shoot the basketball and play close to the basket," Levrets said. "She has the ability to score the basketball as we've seen with Canada Basketball and at times during her freshman year."
In addition to three returning starters, another welcomed addition to the Ute program in Kuklok. She was on the Western Athletic Conference All-Newcomer Team in 2013-14 at Utah Valley and led the Wolverines in scoring throughout the season, pouring in a team-best 16.0 points per game, which stood fifth in the WAC.
"Her ability to shoot the basketball, score the basketball from the perimeter allowing our `bigs' to play inside with shooting around them is just going to make our post play even better," Levrets said. "She's just a tough, hard-nosed competitor who scores in a variety of ways. Her character and who she is has really added to our team."
Sophomore Devri Owens shot .304 (17-56) from 3-point territory in league play as a freshman and averaged 3.3 points in 15.2 minutes per game in conference play.
Sophomore Valerie Nawahine and freshman Gabrielle Bowie will be counted on to supply depth at each guard spot for the Utes in 2014-15.
"One of the long-term benefits of going through a season like the one we had in 2013- 14 was what we found out about our group," Levrets said. "We have a lot of strong-minded people who have come through a very difficult situation better than when we started."
The kids we have in this program right now have tremendous character and are such a fun group to be around," Levrets said. "Fans are going to enjoy how hard they play and the way this group of kids plays the game."
