SALT LAKE CITY - Freshman center Joeseta Fatuesi notched her season high with 16 points and the University of Utah women's basketball team made 23 of 26 foul shots in its third consecutive victory, a 59-40 win over Idaho State, on Wednesday. The Utes are now 4-0 in the Jon M. Huntsman Center to start this season.
Utah (4-4) shot .885 from the free throw line as a team, making 23 of 26 attempts. The Utes made their first six free throw attempts in the first half before Idaho State even went to the line. Eleven of Utah's 16 field goals were assisted and the Utes claimed a 35-33 edge in team rebounding over the Bengals.
The Utes are now 4-0 at home this season outscoring their opponents, 71.0-58.2 per game and shooting .433 from the floor. Utah has outrebounded its opponents 43.0 to 33.5 per game, while holding a 65-33 edge in assists over its opponents.
Fatuesi scored a career-high 16 points, including a 10-of-11 night from the free throw line, for her second double-digit point game of the season. She also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, the second time she has led the team in rebounds.. She also had two assists and two blocks for her first multi-block game.
Sophomore guard Paige Crozon turned in a season-high 11 points off a 2-for-3 night from beyond the 3-point line and she was also 3-for-3 from the foul line to go with two boards.
Senior forward Taryn Wicijowski registered nine points, including a 5-of-6 effort from the free throw line. She also handed out three assists to go with two blocks and two steals. She is now seven offensive rebounds away from tying Kim Smith for the Utah school record.
Junior point guard Danielle Rodriguez dished out three assists, scored six points and had a pair of blocks and two steals. Freshman wing Tanaeya Boclair added five points to go with three rebounds as well as a block and an assist.
Boclair opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, a pair of Fatuesi free throws and a Rodriguez jumper gave the Utes an early 7-0 lead as the Bengals missed their first six shots. ISU got within four at one point (7-3) before Utah scored the last 15 points of the half (21-13), including a Wicijowski, Crozon's second 3-pointer of the contest, a Rodriguez transition lay-in and the last six Utah points by Fatuesi, to give the Utes a 23-point lead (36-13) toward the end of the first half. Fatuesi scored 10 points in the first half after making three of five shots and going 4-for-5 from the free throw line with two blocks and two rebounds. Crozon scored eight points after connecting on three of four shots, 2-of-3 from 3-point territory.
Wicijowski converted a lay-in on Utah's first possession of the second half then hit a pair of free throws to push Utah's lead to 27 (40-13). ISU responded with a 16-4 spurt to cut its deficit to 15 (44-29), but would get no closer as the Utes prevailed with the 19-point win (59-40).
Idaho State (2-6) was led by 13 points from Apiphany Woods and an 11-point, six-rebound night from Anna Policicchio.
