Utah Women's Basketball Takes 54-52 Win Over Charlotte

SALT LAKE CITY - Senior forward Taryn Wicijowski turned in her fifth double-double of the year and became the school's all-time offensive rebound leader as the University of Utah women's basketball team edged Charlotte, 54-52, in its non-conference finale Monday in the Huntsman Center.
Utah (6-5) had four players score at least nine points as the Utes held the 49ers to a 38.5 (20-52) shooting percentage.
"I told the team after the game, I was really proud that we won," Utah Head Coach Anthony Levrets said. "I'm really proud of how we managed the last possession. We did a really good job defensively and we finished the possession off."
With four offensive rebounds in the contest, Wicijowski now has 342 career offensive rebounds, passing Kim Smith (341 from 2002-06). She connected on seven of 12 field goal attempts for a game-high 17 points to go with 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She has nine games with double-digits in points this season and six with double-digits in rebounds
Junior point guard Danielle Rodriguez score 11 points after shooting 5-for-8 from the field, which was her third double-figure scoring game of the year. She also dished out four assists, pulled down three rebounds to with a block and an assist.
Freshman forward Tanaeya Boclair scored nine points after making four of eight shots from the floor to go with a team-high three steals and an assist.
Senior guard Cheyenne Wilson knocked down three 3-pointers for nine points, while Paige Crozon knocked in a pair of 3-pointers for six points.
A lay-in by Wicijowski off an inbounds play started the scoring and she scored two more lay-ins as Rodriguez hit a 3-pointer and lay-in to spark a 9-0 run to put the Utes ahead by nine, 11-2. The Utes connective on five of their first eight shots and earned an 8-0 edge in points in the paint the early going. The 49ers scored five straight to pull within four (11-7) before Rodriguez beat Charlotte's press for a pull-up jumper (13-7). The Utes extended their lead to 12 (21-9) after a Crozon 3-pointer, but the 49ers fought back with a 13-1 run to tie the game for the first time (22-22). Wicijowski responded with an old-fashioned 3-point play, Wilson buried her first 3-pointer of the contest and Boclair had a putback as part of an 8-3 Utah run (30-25) to close the first half. Wicijowski made four of her five field goal attempts for 10 points and six rebounds to go with three assists, while Boclair and Rodriguez scored seven points apiece.
The Utes carried that momentum into the second half as their lead grew to as many as 13 (52-39) as Utah made nine of its first 17 field goal attempts (52.9). The 49ers once again came back with a run, this time a 10-0 stretch, to come within three (52-49). Rodriguez knocked down a jumper to bring Utah's lead back to five (54-49). Charlotte managed one more basket and a free throw, but Utah held on for the 54-52 victory.
Charlotte (4-8) received a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double from Kira Gordon, while Lefty Webster scored 13 points to go with eight boards.
