PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior forward Taryn Wicijowski turned in 23 points with nine rebounds, but the University of Utah women's basketball team fell at Washington State, 63-54, on Friday in Beasley Coliseum.
Utah (6-12, 0-7 Pac-12) held a 45.5 (20-44) to 32.8 (20-61) edge in shooting percentage at Washington State to go with a 38-29 advantage in team rebounding.
Wicijowski recorded her fourth game with 20 or more points this season after going for a game-high 23 points off an 8-for-15 shooting performance and just missed her seventh double-double of the season after pulling down a game-high nine rebounds.
Senior guard Cheyenne Wilson scored 10 points after shooting 50.0 (4-of-8) from the floor, including a 2-for-4 night from 3-point territory. This was her third game in double-figures this season.
Junior guard Danielle Rodriguez grabbed seven rebounds to go with six points on two assists.
Redshirt sophomore Nakia Arquette connected on two of three shots for five points, while freshman wing Tanaeya Boclair scored four points to go with four rebounds. Freshman center Joeseta Fatuesi corralled eight rebounds to go with four caroms and two assists.
Boclair knocked down a runner through the lane for the first score of the game and Wicijowski made to lay-ins to give Utah an early 6-1 lead and earned a five-point lead (9-4) before Wicijowski worked her way into the post for a lay-in that gave Utah its largest lead of the half at eight points (24-16, 26-18) before Wilson buried a 3-pointer at the top of the key to push Utah's lead to nine (29-20). The Cougars scored six of the next eight points (31-26) before Wicijowski knocked down a jump shot as the final horn of the first half sounded to give Utah a 33-26 lead. The Utes shot 54.2 (13-24) from the floor during the first half to go with a 21-13 edge in rebounding. Wicijowski scored 14 points, hauled in eight rebounds and distributed three assists as Wilson scored six points with an assist and Arquette had five pts after going 2-for-3 from the floor. The Utes are now 4-2 this season when taking a lead into halftime.
Utah maintained a nine-point lead (37-28) early in the second half, but WSU came back with an 8-2 stretch to pull within two (39-37, 41-39). The Cougars then trimmed the deficit to one (42-41, 44-43) on a pair of occasions before taking the lead for the first time, 48-46. WSU would lead by as many as five (52-47). Wicijowski converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to close the Utes within two (52-50), but unfortunately Utah could not get closer as Washington State came away with the 63-54 victory.
Washington State (12-6, 3-4 Pac-12) was led by 17 points from Tia Presley.
The Utes next head to Seattle to take on the Washington Huskies on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT. The game will be aired live on the Pac-12 Networks with Ann Schatz (PBP) and Elise Woodward (Analyst) calling the action from Alaska Airlines Arena.
