With construction of the Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility and the Sorenson High Performance Center completed earlier this month, the University of Utah women's basketball program has one of the most impressive support systems in the nation at its disposal.
Now it is Utah's first-year head coach Lynne Roberts' turn to build.
Entering her 14th season as a head coach, Roberts and her staff are laying the foundation for success during their first season in Salt Lake City in 2015-16 and beyond by ignoring outcome oriented goals and focusing on "coaching the process."
"Our goal as a staff is for this group to reach their potential," Roberts said. "We want to stay healthy. We want them to have fun, enjoy playing and competing in the Pac-12 [Conference]. Every week, we want to get better. I've learned in my years of coaching that you really have to coach the process. You can't coach outcome and get so wrapped up in thinking about the end of the season or any kind of final outcome that we are trying to achieve."
In contrast to all of the new elements surrounding the program, six Utah players who have significant starting experience of more than 200 games in their career return to the Ute lineup. That level of previous playing time will ease the transition into a new system.
"I have to think our experience will help," Roberts said. "They're used to playing at this level. The difference is that it's a new system. Even though they're experienced, there is some growing to do, but there's still no better teacher than experience."
As part of that new system, maximum effort and increased tempo will be especially emphasized under Roberts. Her teams have averaged 71.2 points per game in her 13 seasons as a head coach and her squads at Pacific led or were second in scoring in its conference during six of her eight seasons. Her last two teams at Chico State averaged 84.6 points per game and were in the top 10 nationally in scoring both seasons. The 2004-05 team was second in the country, averaging 88.6 points per game. The Wildcats were seventh in the NCAA in scoring in 2005-06 with 80.94 points per game.
"Everyone has the same responsibility to beat their defender down the floor," Roberts said. "Our program will be predicated on effort -- absolute effort. The only thing that makes me truly angry as a coach is a lack of effort. Sprinting your lane is effort. Jogging your lane is a lack of effort. You have to sprint your lane."
The Utes took on a grueling training program during the offseason under the direction of the team's new strength and conditioning coach Jacquelyn Harris to not only maintain health, but play with a pace that will create opportunities for transition baskets. "Jacquelyn has done a fantastic job of getting our players ready for the season. They've worked really hard and the progress we've made from a physical standpoint is obvious.
"We're going to try to create advantage breaks if we can beat you down the floor, like 5-on-4, 4-on-2, 2-on-1. If we can create an advantage break, then we're going to try and take it. Everyone has a role in that. It doesn't matter what position you play, your role is the same: You better hustle down the floor as fast as possible. On offense, nothing we do is slow-paced, but that doesn't mean that we're frantic. We'll push the ball in the full court, but have a smart and controlled pace in the half court."
Our Head Coach is kind of a Goofball...but, we love her ;)
