2015-16 Utah Women's Basketball Schedule
SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah women's basketball team opened practice for the 2015-16 season this week in the brand new Jon M. & Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility.
"I've been pleased [with the first two days of practice]," Utah Head Coach Lynne Roberts said. "Everything is new. All of the drills are new. The tempo is new. The style is new. With that comes a pretty steep learning curve. I'm impressed with our team's willingness to roll with it and learn. They're doing a really nice job of doing what we ask them to do."
After a 10-minute warm-up, the Utes started Wednesday's practice by breaking into two groups to focus on the fundamentals of their dribble and drive attack. One coach in each drill wore punch mitts to increase the game-like feel, while a team manager with a pad contested each layup at the rim.
"The first two days have been really good," sophomore guard Gabrielle Bowie said. "There is a lot of positivity and energy coming in. We're all excited."
Up next was a rapid-fire shooting drill at four different baskets, two from mid-range and two from 3-point territory, with each Ute yelling out loud to keep track of how many shots they have made.
Attention turned to defense in the next segment as the same two groups slit up and worked on Utah's strategy for defending penetration and ball movement by the offense.
Even with the grand opening ceremony behind them, the Utes are still awestruck about the luxury and convenience of their new home, the Jon M. & Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility.
"The new facility is ridiculous," Roberts said. "It really is nice. As I told our team, it makes you puff up a little bit because you are proud to get to go to work here every day."
"It's so amazing," Bowie said. "We haven't had enough time in it yet, but it's really nice and we're incredibly blessed to have it."
The Utes host Fort Lewis in an exhibition game on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. MT before the season officially tips off Friday, Nov. 13 at 4:45 p.m. MT in the Huntsman Center. Check out ticket options at utahtickets.com.
