Opening statement:
"We're coming off of a good win against a very good South Dakota team. I'm proud of our players. It was a classic first game. We had moments where we looked good and moments where we didn't, but we found a way to win. We had practice yesterday and we really felt some confidence in that after just finding a way to win. South Dakota is a good team. They're picked to win their league and win 20-plus games so that was a good win. We play Lamar University tomorrow at home, which will be a tough game for us. They're very athletic and picked to win their league this year as well. These are good home games against good teams. It will certainly give us another opportunity to see where we are."
On grading her team's performance against South Dakota:
"I would give ourselves a solid B for the first game. If we make the same mistakes we made on Friday in January, then it would probably be a D. For where we're at in the season, we certainly have a lot to improve upon, but for where we're at with a new system and new coaches, I'd give us a solid B."
On Emily Potter:
"Potter had a great game [against South Dakota]. She's just so long. She did a great job. She had four blocks and she also had eight deflections. That's something we stat. She's just being incredibly active back there. As a defender on the perimeter, you know if you get beat, you have her behind you, which is a huge confidence boost. She did a great job staying out of foul trouble as well. It's hard to do, being that active and not be in foul trouble. She was a big reason why [South Dakota] shot 31 percent for the game. Defensively, she's the anchor back there."
On Lamar:
"Lamar is good. They're very well-coached and they play hard. They're not super big. Our size is an advantage for us, but they're athletic 1 through 5, very athletic. It may be a contrast or battle of wills. If we play their style, we may be at risk of getting out of control and turning it over. They'll press you for 40 minutes. They're try to turn you over and get out and run. They play a five-out offense, whether you're in man or zone [defense]. They just try to take you off the dribble. They shoot 3s well and they rebound very well. They're just very different. They're a unique team to play, but that's good. They'll test us defensively. We can get out and run a little bit with them, but they have to come here and play us at elevation so I like that we're playing them at home, that's for sure."
On what her team needs to improve on:
"We just need to get better defensively and clean things up. The players will tell you the same thing. We have to do a better job of communicating. We had some lapses defensively that we have to clean up. The offense takes care of itself. We work on it every day. Those things happen when you play together every day and learn a new system. I don't worry so much about that. The defensive rotations, all being on the same page and finishing plays, like coming down with the rebound are things we have to work on. South Dakota had 15 offensive boards. If we're averaging giving up 15 offensive boards a game, we're going to have a hard time winning games. We have to figure out how to clean that up. Our effort has been pretty good. It's just a matter of putting it together. The way I want to play is instinctive so the team is learning what that means. Their hearts are right, they're just trying to figure out how to do it. A lot of times in basketball, if you're a half a second too late because you're thinking, it's just too late. We'll get there. The teams has bought in. They're doing what we are asking them to do. It's just the adjustment time right now."
On Paige Crozon's rebounding effort:
"Paige is a stud. She's a great player. She had 14 rebounds in our exhibition and eight against South Dakota. That's her job. We talk about her job being to rebound and knock down the kick-out 3s. She did that [against South Dakota]. She had five points in the last 2.5 minutes of the game that were huge. She hit the dagger 3, but she did her job all game long and then just happened to be there at the end to make a 3 in the corner. She's been huge for us. Twenty-two rebounds through two games is not bad."
On starters playing a majority of the game against South Dakota:
"Ideally, that's not how I want the minutes spread out. Over a 30-game season, that's certainly not ideal. It was just the flow of the game. We're still figuring out what we're able to do on both ends of the floor. I would have liked to have played the bench a little bit more and I certainly think that will be what we move toward. Every game is different. You get in certain situations and I just stuck with the rotation. Our fitness showed. [South Dakota] wore down in the last couple of minutes. We're in good shape."
On Malia Nawahine:
"She's been good. She's healthy. She is a tremendous athlete. She's fast, a track athlete out there. The one thing that Malia has brought to us is just a little bit of intensity. She has a little bit of an edge to her when she plays, which I love and we need that. She's not afraid to mix it up. For being 5'10" and kind of slight, she'll go in there and mix it up with anyone. She's fearless, in a word. She's not afraid to attack the bucket. She's not afraid to shoot the 3 when she needs to get on the floor and rebound. You need that to win games. She's been good so far. I expect her to have a great year."
On the incoming recruiting class for the 2016-17 season:
"We have Daneesha Provo, who is redshirting this year, after transferring from Clemson. We think of her as a 2016 recruit because that's when she'll be able to play. She's practicing with us every day. She would play quite a bit this year if she was eligible. She's a long athletic wing, a very good Canadian from Nova Scotia. She went to Clemson and transferred here. We count her as one of our recruits for next year. Kiana Moore from Vanden High School [in Fairfield, Calif.] is really good. She's an incredible athlete. She'll be the best athlete on our team next year with her quickness and explosiveness. She can play the 1, 2 or the 3. She's very versatile. Megan Jacobs is a 6-1 guard. She's very versatile, too. She can play point guard through the small forward spot. She can shoot the 3. She has very good vision. She has Pac-12 size. We're excited about those two. I've known them for a long time and have known their families. I feel very comfortable with the type of kid we're getting from great families and great programs. We're headed in the right direction with those three next year, for sure."
