SEATTLE - Freshman center Joeseta Fatuesi tied her season high with 16 points with nine rebounds, the University of Utah women's basketball team could not avoid a 75-64 defeat to Washington in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament on Thursday in KeyArena.
Utah (9-21) had three players reach double-digits in points. Fatuesi made four of her first five shots on the way to a 16-point performance. She just missed her second double-double of the season after grabbing nine rebounds.
Freshman Tanaeya Boclair scored 14 points and came up just two shy of tying her season high, including an 8-for-8 performance from the free throw line.
Junior point guard Danielle Rodriguez poured in 12 points to go with four rebounds, including a game-high five assists with a 4-for-5 night at the free throw line.
Senior guard Cheyenne Wilson buried three 3-pointers to go with three rebounds.
Senior forward Taryn Wicijowski turned in her 11th game with 10 or more rebounds as she tied for game-high honors by hauling in 11 rebounds.
Rodriguez opened the scoring with an old-fashioned 3-point play, Wilson connected on a jump shot and Fatuesi converted a lay-in (7-0) before a 19-7 Husky run gave UW an 19-14 lead. Three-pointers by Wilson and sophomore guard Paige Crozon brought the Utes within one (21-20) before a 6-1 Utah spurt gave them the lead back (23-22). The Utes would lead by as many as eight (34-26) before heading into halftime with a six-point advantage (34-24). Wilson led the way with nine points, while Fatuesi had eight pts. Wicijowski and Fatuesi have six boards apiece.
The Huskies went on a 13-2 run to start the second half to open a five-point lead (41-36), but Utah fought back to take a 48-47 lead. Washington then went on a 9-2 stretch to seize a 60-52 advantage. The Utes were able to respond with a 9-4 spurt to get back to within three (64-61), but unfortunately could not get any closer as Washington took the 75-64 victory.
Washington (23-8) was led by a combined 52 points from Jazmine Davis (29) and Kelsey Plum (23).
