SALT LAKE CITY - New Utah women's basketball coach Lynne Roberts began assembling her staff today by hiring Gavin Petersen as an assistant coach. Petersen, a 13-year veteran of NCAA Division I coaching, spent the last two seasons as an assistant to Roberts at Pacific.
"We are so lucky to have a quality coach like Gavin Petersen join our Utah family," Roberts said. "He has been an associate head coach and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. Having worked with him already, I know that Gavin will be able to hit the ground running with recruiting, scouting, and player development. Gavin is extremely loyal to his players and program. I know he's ready and excited to be a Ute."
Petersen, who has also served as an assistant coach at Hawai'i (twice), Idaho and Idaho State, has helped eight teams reach the postseason.
Both his years as an assistant coach at Pacific, the Tigers qualified for the WNIT. This past season, they finished 21-10 (13-5 in West Coast Conference) after going 18-13 overall and 12-6 in the WCC in 2013-14.
"I'm excited and thrilled about the opportunity to join the staff here at the University of Utah," Petersen said. "I know from the time I spent at Idaho and Idaho State, Utah has a winning and tradition-rich program that I can't wait to join."
Before joining the staff at Pacific, Petersen spent two seasons in his second stint as an assistant coach at Hawai'i. He helped the Rainbow Wahine reach the WNIT in 2012-13, the school's first postseason trip in 10 years. He was also an assistant coach at Hawai'i from 2002-04.
From 2008-11, Petersen was an assistant at Idaho, where he aided in the turnaround of the Vandals' program. Idaho made just its third NCAA Division I postseason trip in program history with a Women's Basketball Invitational appearance in 2011.
From 2004-08, Petersen was an assistant coach and associate head coach at Idaho State. During his stay, the Bengals won two conference titles and earned three postseason berths. The Bengals won the 2006 Big Sky Conference regular-season title and played in the WNIT. In 2007, ISU won the Big Sky Tournament title and received the league's automatic NCAA berth. The Bengals returned to the WNIT in 2007-08.
A native of Honolulu, Hawai'i, Petersen earned his bachelor's degree in justice administration at Hawai'i Pacific in 1999 before obtaining a master's in kinesiology and leisure science degree from the Hawai'i in 2009.
Petersen and his wife, Karen (Ada), have two daughters, Breagh born in 2011, and Brooklyn born in 2013. Karen coached at Sacramento State (2001-05) and Idaho (2008-11). She played at Oregon from (1998-2000) before finishing her collegiate career at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
