SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah women's basketball head coach Lynne Roberts completed her staff today by naming Danyelle Snelgro and Wesley Brooks as assistant coaches.
Snelgro, a former first-team all-Western Athletic Conference player at Utah State, began her coaching career in Logan, where she was an assistant from 2010-12. Her other coaching experience was as an assistant at Fresno State from 2012-14 and TCU in the 2014-15 season. Brooks, who brings eight years of assistant coaching experience at four schools, has been at the University of North Texas for the last four seasons.
"Danyelle and Wesley are great people who will bring instant energy and work ethic to our program," Roberts said. "Danyelle was an all-conference college player in the state of Utah and brings valuable experience as a player. She has been an essential part of very successful and nationally-respected programs, both as a player and a coach. She is very organized and is a tremendous recruiter. The quality that stood out to me with Danyelle was her sincere desire to build quality relationships with our players and be a positive role model.
"Wesley is a tireless worker. He has a positive energy and enthusiasm to him that is contagious. He has proven to be a relentless recruiter and will provide our program with instant recruiting connections. He has extensive knowledge as a teacher on the court and has a passion for working with players to help develop their individual games."
Last year, Snelgro helped TCU advance to the second round of the Women's NIT after finishing third in the Big 12 Conference--the program's best Big 12 finish since joining the conference. While at Fresno State from 2012-14, Snelgro helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Tournament twice after winning consecutive Mountain West Conference Tournament championships. Fresno State went 46-20 overall and 26-8 in league play during her stay. In both seasons as an assistant coach at Utah State, the Aggies reached the WNIT (advancing to the second round in 2012) and the Western Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals. Utah State finished 21-10 in the 2011-12 season.
Several of the guards Snelgo coached earned postseason accolades, including TCU's Chelsea Prince, the 2015 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and first-team all-Big 12 selection Zahna Medley. Another Snelgro protégé, Fresno State guard Ki-Ki Moore, was named the MWC Defensive Player of the Year and MWC Tournament MVP in 2013 and Taylor Thompson was named the 2014 MWC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and was a two-time all-MWC selection. Utah State's Ashlee Brown was the 2012 WAC Defensive Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and a first-team all-WAC and WBCA All-Region selection. Aggie guard Devyn Christensen also made first-team all-WAC and all-region.
"I am so grateful and excited to be a part of the staff here at the University of Utah," Snelgro said. "Some of my greatest moments have come in the Beehive State. I am humbled by the opportunity to add to the staff and great tradition of this women's basketball program."
Snelgro played at Utah State from 2005-09, making the all-WAC Freshman Team in 2005 and becoming the school's first all-WAC first-team selection as a senior when she was also named to the all-WAC Defensive Team. She is currently third in school history in assists (336) and steals (216) and seventh in career points with 1,043. Snelgro helped the Aggies to the second round of the WAC Tournament for the first time with a first-round overtime win over Idaho.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in inter-disciplinary studies from Utah State in 2009, she played one season of professional basketball in Finland in 2009-10. The Altadena, Calif., native began working towards a master's degree in liberal arts while at TCU.
Brooks also brings extensive assistant coaching experience to the U. Over the last four seasons at North Texas, Brooks helped the Mean Green transition into Conference USA from the Sun Belt Conference. From 2008-11, Brooks was an assistant coach at Texas Southern, where he was responsible for post player instruction, recruiting and scheduling among other duties. Brooks' first full-time assistant coaching position was at Robert Morris University in 2007-08. The Colonials qualified for the NCAA Tournament after winning a share of the Northeast Conference title.
He was a graduate assistant for two seasons at West Virginia from 2004-06 and helped the Mountaineers reach the 2005 WNIT Finals. He then spent a season as the director of women's basketball operations at WVU in 2006-07--a year in which the Mountaineers reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Players who benefitted from Brooks' coaching included 2012 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Loryn Goodwin of North Texas. Robert Morris's Sade Buley was named the NEC Player of the Year and two Colonials earned a place on the all-conference first team.
"It is an honor and privilege to be a part of the University of Utah," Brooks said. "I look forward to working hard for Coach Roberts and with the rest of the staff to continue to build upon the rich tradition of Utah women's Basketball, and making the University of Utah and community of Salt Lake City proud."
The Richmond, Va., native earned a bachelor's of science degree in broadcast journalism from WVU in 2004 as well as a master's of science in athletic coaching education from WVU in 2006.
