SALT LAKE CITY - Sophomore wing Daneesha Provo has been added to the University of Utah women's basketball roster, head coach Lynne Roberts announced Monday. The transfer from Clemson will be eligible to compete for the Utes during the 2016-17 season with three years remaining to use three seasons of eligibility.
Provo also has extensive international experience with Team Canada and will be the 14th Canadian-born student-athlete to play for the Utes since 1997-98. There has been at least one Canadian on the Utah roster every season since 1997-98 with at least two on the squad since 2009-10.
"We are really excited that Daneesha has decided to be a Ute," Roberts said. "She was highly recruited and we are glad to be able to keep our program's connection with Canada strong. Daneehsa is a long athlete who can really shoot the 3 and her extensive playing experience with Team Canada gives her that X-factor that is hard to find. She has a tremendous work ethic and drive to be great, which will help her during her redshirt transfer season. Beyond the court, Daneesha is a really great person and will fit in so well with our current players."
Provo averaged 5.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per contest at Clemson last season before electing to withdraw from school in January of 2015 for personal reasons. She connected on 10 3-point attempts for the Tigers and hit 20 of 22 free throws (.909).
"I am excited to attend the University of Utah because it's a great school academically and I feel like I can contribute in the women's basketball program," Provo said. "Many Canadians on the women's side have attended the University of Utah and have been very successful on the Canadian National Team. My goal is to continue that legacy here. It felt like home and everyone was really welcoming."
The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native hit double-figures in points four times and saw the court for all 12 games in which she dressed at Clemson, including a season high of 13 points against North Dakota (including another 3-for-4 effort from 3-point territory). She posted an 11-point outing in the season opener against UNC Greensboro off a 3-for-4 performance from 3-point range. Provo went for 11 points and grabbed a season-high five rebounds versus Longwood added 10 points against Florida Gulf Coast.
Provo averaged 12.0 points, with four double-figure outings in five games, to lead Canada to a silver medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championships in Colorado Springs last August.
She helped the Canadians to another silver medal at the 2014 FIBA Americas 3x3 U18 Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia and was also a member of Team Canada at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships in Lithuania.
Provo will continue competing with the Canadian U19 Team at the FIBA World Championships July 18-26 in Chekhov, Russia. Keep track of the tournament at fiba.com.
