SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team gets the fall season underway this weekend with the squad splitting up and traveling to Costa Mesa, California and Bozeman, Montana.
On Thursday, Freddie McGeehan, Parker McGuiness, and Dan Little head to the West Coast. The trio will participate in the ITF USA F27 Futures tournament where they will compete against players at the professional level.
McGuiness participated in this event last fall where he fell in the first round of draws, which he hopes to improve on this year.
The rest of the team will be heading up to Montana to compete in the Bobcat Invitational. It will be an exciting first outing for the Utes as the new addition to the team Egbert "Eggie" Weverink will pair up with Matt Cowley. In the latest ITF press release, the new duo was given a national ranking of No. 59.
"It's a great honor to be recognized in the preseason rankings," stated Brateanu. "Eggie and Matt have tremendous upside in doubles and we look forward to improving on this ranking."
In this tournament, the Ute tandem will be the No. 1 seed in the doubles draw. Weverink will also be seeded No. 1 in the singles draw with Cowley being seeded No. 2 in the singles draw. Along with Cowley and Weverink, the team will have Johan Jonhagen, Santiago Sierra, Jamey Swiggart, and Louis-Philippe Gascon participating in this event.
"We are excited to get the 2015/2016 season underway," Brateanu added. "We have a young, but super talented team this year and I'm excited to see what we can do."
