SALT LAKE CITY -- Sophomore wing Malia Nawahine posted a team-high 14 points, her sixth double-figure game of the season, but the University of Utah women's basketball team fell to USC 70-59 during its Ute Proud Game on Friday in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
In a close game that had eight lead changes and was tied seven times, Utah (12-8, 4-5 Pac-12) held a 44-32 advantage in points in the paint over USC and the Utes also held an 11-6 edge in second-chance points over the Trojans.
Nawahine poured in 14 points to record double-digits for the 14th time of her career and the sixth time this season. She also hauled in five rebounds and tied her career high with three steals and was 5-of-7 from the free throw line.
Junior wing Paige Crozon scored 12 points to go with six boards in addition to a 4-for-4 evening from the free throw line. The Humboldt, Saskatchewan native has been in double figures 13 times in 2015-16 and 22 career double-figure scoring efforts.
Redshirt sophomore forward Emily Potter was the third Ute in double-figures as she scored 10 points off a 5-for-9 shooting effort to record double-figures for the 36th time in her career and the 18th time this season. She also tied her career high for the fifth time with three assists.
Sophomore wing Tanaeya Boclair contributed eight points and tied her season high for the second time in three games with eight rebounds. She was 4-for-6 from the field against the Trojans.
Sophomore forward Joeseta Fatuesi added seven points and grabbed three boards to go with a season-high-tying two blocks.
Senior point guard Danielle Rodriguez dished out five assists and scored six points.
USC missed its first four shots before Nawahine buried a corner 3-pointer and Boclair converted an up-and-under move to put Utah ahead, 5-2. The Women of Troy scored five straight to tie the game for the first time and the contest would be tied four more times (9, 11, 13 and 15). Crozon paced the Ute offense with six first-quarter points, while Potter hauled in a team-high three boards.
The Trojans 14 of the next nine 22 points to grab a six-point lead (29-23) before the Utes scored the next six points to tie the game for the sixth time at 29 all. The teams would remain within three points of one another for the remainder of the half as USC would take a 39-37 lead into halftime. Potter registered eight points in the frame after a 4-for-6 shooting performance. Nawahine added six points after a 2-for-3 effort at the foul line in the frame.
USC managed to build a 13-point lead halfway through the third quarter (57-44) before a Fatuesi old-fashioned 3-point play brought the Utes back within 11 (57-47) with 2:11 remaining in the third frame. Nawahine and Fatuesi scored three points apiece in the third quarter.
The Utes scored 10 of the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to fight back to within four (61-57), but unfortunately Utah could get no closer as USC came away with the 70-59 victory. Crozon scored four points, all on free throws, and hauled in three rebounds in the fourth frame.
USC (15-5, 4-5 Pac-12) was led by a game-high 24 points from Sadie Edwards, while Temi Fagbenle had a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Utes continue their homestand against No. 15/19 UCLA on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. MT with live video streaming at pac-12.com, while Rick Bouillon will have the play-by-play call on ESPN 700 at ESPN 700.
