McGuiness and Woolley advance in tournament
TULSA, Okla. – Senior Parker McGuiness and sophomore Joe Woolley won both their matches on the first day of the pre-qualifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
"I'm happy with the team's performance today," said McGuiness. "We will look to keep our momentum going into tomorrow's matches."
In his final year of collegiate competition, McGuiness extended his win streak to six matches and remains unbeaten with two straight-set victories on Saturday. In the first round he defeated Mitchell Pritchard (Tulsa) 6-3, 6-1, followed by a 6-3, 6-3 win over Brown's Jack Haworth. McGuiness will face UCLA's Joseph DiGuilio in the third round Sunday at 10 a.m.
Englishman Joe Woolley competing in his first year as a Ute, started the day off slow against Christoffer Greve (Illinois State), losing the first set, but was able to turn things around and win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Â In the second round Woolley defeated Marko Goles-Babic (San Diego State) in a closely contested match, 6-3, 7-6(11), to set up a third round match against Texas Tech's Connor Curry Sunday at 9 a.m.
In order to advance to the qualifying draw, both Woolley and McGuiness will need to win two matches on Sunday. Sophomore David Micevski starts competition on Monday in the qualifying draw.
Junior Egbert Weverink was defeated in the first round by LSU's Agie Moreno, 6-3, 6-3 and will play a consolation match Sunday at 11 a.m. against Mike Psarross (UMKC).
