This Weekend
(RV/No.23) Utah Soccer prepares for a big weekend in the Bay Area with contests at No. 10/8 Cal (Thurs., 2 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Network)Â and No. 3/4 Stanford (Sun., 1 p.m. PT). The Golden Bears boast the stingiest defense in the league with 10 shutouts and only six goals allowed. Meanwhile, Stanford has the highest-scoring offense in the Pac-12 with 33 goals, an average of 2.4 per contest.
The Utes are in search of their 11th win of the season, a mark not reached since 2008. Utah has never won more than two conference games on the road since joining the Pac-12 and will be looking for a third this season. It went 2-3-0 last season and stands at 8-19-3 overall.
Six conference wins and 20 points are the program standard since joining the Pac-12, both done in 2013. That was also the only time Utah has reached the NCAA Tournament since joining the conference in 2011. A result of any kind this weekend would seal a winning record in Pac-12 play for the Utes.
Utah will also look to put two dubious streaks to bed this weekend. The Utes have not beaten a team ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 in their last 24 contests dating back to a 1-0 victory over Oregon State on October 14, 2011. This was also their first game against a Top 25 team as a member of the Pac-12
Utah his also winless in its last 23 matches away from home against nationally-ranked foes. That streak dates back to a 1-0 victory at No. 14 BYU on October 13, 2007.
Last Weekend
Utah continued the best start for the program since joining the Pac-12 with a win over Washington State. It was the first time the Utes have posted three-consecutive shutouts in Pac-12 play since 2013. Hailey Skolmoski had the game-winner, her seventh of the season and third in a row for the Utes.Â
Rising in the Rankings
For the second week in a row, Utah is receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25. Meanwhile, it jumped into the Soccer America National Poll at No. 23. The Utes are currently ranked No. 20 by HeroSports.com, No. 22 by TopDrawerSoccer.com and the team's RPI continues to hold steady at No. 25 in the nation.
Skolmoski Pacing the Pac-12
Utah's Hailey Skolmoski was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Oct. 11, the first Ute to ever achieve this honor on a pair of occasions.
After scoring last week, she now has 11 goals on the season, which ranks 12th in the nation. That number also paces the Pac-12 along with her 24 points. Both totals are the most for a Utah player since Adele Letro in 2007Â (17 G, 39 P). She is also the first player to score five goals in conference play since Letro in 2006 when the Utes were in the Mountain West.Â
With two more goals, she will pass Amy Kofoed (1999) and Staci Burt (1998) for fourth place on the single-season charts. Six more points would put her fifth on the single-season scoring list, passing Kofoed and Katie Tate (2000).Â
Skolmoski was the 2014 Utah Gatorade Player of the Year after scoring a school record 28 goals at Riverton HS and winning a pair of regional titles.Â
Steady Sophomore Shutting Out Foes
Goalkeeper July Mathias has the second-best single-season goals-against average in team history at 0.55, which ranks 22nd in the nation. Ashley Mason holds the school record with a 0.30 GAA in 2003. Two more shutouts form Mathias would place her third on Utah's single-season list
Series History
The Utes are 0-6-2 all-time against the Golden Bears and have been out-scored 19-5 all-time. After making this trip just once from 1997 to 2014, the Utes have now played in Berkeley for three consecutive seasons.
Utah is 1-6-1 all-time against Stanford with the only victory occurring in the 2006 opener. The Utes topped the No. 19 Cardinal on the road, 2-1. In all six Pac-12 meetings, the Cardinal have been ranked in the Top 10 nationally.
Can Katie be the Key?
Katie Rogers has come up with some key plays against the two Bay Area schools, assisting on the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with the No. 4 Cardinal in 2014. She then scored the tying goal in a 2-2 draw at No. 23 Cal later in the season. Last season, she gave Utah an early lead against No. 8 Stanford at Ute Field
Rogers, a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection, moved into a more defensive midfield role last season and started all but one contest for the Utes. She has started all but one contest over the last three seasons and is a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree as well as a NSCAA Academic All-Region selection.
Utah Making an IMPACT
Utah Soccer, in coordination with Team IMPACT, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team, has announced the addition of Ariauna Christensen, a 13-year old from West Valley.
Christensen, who has been diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia, a disease that affects the bone marrow and results in decreased production of blood cells, signed with the Utes last Thursday and suited up for Friday's contest against Washington State
