BERKELEY, Calif. - RV/No.23 Utah Soccer (10-2-3, 5-0-2) and No. 10/8 Cal (12-2-2, 5-0-2) fought to a 1-1 double-overtime draw this afternoon.
Taylor Slattery scored an early goal before Cal answered in the second half.
Â
"This was a championship fight," head coach
Rich Manning said. "I can definitely sense our confidence because we played really well in the first half. Then we got a second win starting with the last 10 minutes of regulation and forced their keeper into some great saves at the end.
Â
I think we have a really strong mentality heading into these big road games. We have fighters on our team that want to win every time out. Our backline and goalkeeper have been really stout for us and they were again today."
Â
"We like being the underdog because that puts us in a good position," Slattery stated. "We want to take it one match at a time. We come out every game to battle and that's what make this team fun."
Â
The Golden Bears entered the game boasting the stingiest defense in the Pac-12 with 10 shutouts and only six goals allowed, but Slattery was able to notch the breakthrough in the 23
rd minute. It was also Cal's first blemish on a perfect home record (8-0-1)
Â
The senior took a pass from
Natalie Vukic, turned and fired a strike into the top of the net for a 1-0 Utah lead. It was the first goal allowed by Emily Boyd and the Golden Bears in 223 minutes of game time. For Slattery, the goal was extra sweet since it came in front of a contingent that made the two-hour drive from her hometown of Gilroy to see her play.
Â
"It was really cool because my family and friends can only come to handful of games," Slattery added. "I felt like I had been saving that one just for them (laugh)."
Â
July Mathias was solid once again for the Utes, stopping Arielle Ship at the onset. Slattery's first try of the game was blocked and
Hailey Skolmoski forced a save from Boyd in the 18
th minute. After Utah grabbed the lead, Vukic had a chance to double the advantage but Boyd was there for the Bears.
Â
Mathias closed the half with a pair of saves on Ship and Mia Corbin to keep the Utes ahead into the intermission.
Â
Utah had a couple early chances in the second half with Skolmoski missing high and wide and
Katie Rogers having a try blocked.
Â
Mathias was once again called into action as she stopped Heather Walleigh in the 55
th minute, but she could not deny Ifeoma Onumonu from heading home her ninth goal of the season on the hour. The tally was the first allowed by the Utah defense in 409 minutes of action.
Â
Following the goal, Slattery and Skolmoski had scoring chances for the Utes, while Mathias denied Emma Fletcher and Walleigh in the waning minutes of regulation.
Â
In overtime, the action remained tense as Ship hit the post to start the first extra period. Utah answered and Rogers headed off the crossbar from a free kick in the 94
th minute. Mathias was able to corral a Fletcher try in the final seconds to keep it knotted.
After Mathias made a stop on Abigail Kim to open the second OT,
Eden Jacobsen and Slattery missed opportunities for the Utes. However, the best chance may have been the final one as Vukic forced an acrobatic save from Boyd that ensure the game ended in a draw.
Â
The Utes remain on the road with a match Sunday at 1 p.m. PT vs. No. 3 Stanford.
