SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 74-64 win over Montana State Saturday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) held the Bobcats (0-1, 0-0 Big Sky) to 27.4 percent shooting from the floor and 14.3 percent from beyond the arc.
"We were able to switch a lot of their screens. It's difficult to execute what you're used to executing when you're stretched," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "If you're long and athletic, and have versatility then defensively you're able to do those things, which we were able to do."
Junior forward
Emily Potter grabbed a double-double scoring 21 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Junior wing
Malia Nawahine scored 19 points, including 6-6 from the foul line. Potter and Nawahine were perfect from the foul line for a combined 11-for-11.
Utah won the tip as senior forward
Emily Potter scored on the first possession of the game for a 2-0 lead.
Montana State tied the game last in the first quarter with a bucket under the basket from Peyton Ferris. Junior forward
Joeseta Fatuesi scored for the Utah lead, but MSU's Ferris tied the game again at 18 to end the first quarter.
The Bobcats took a 3-point lead three minutes into the second quarter to go up 23-20. MSU controlled the lead until Potter connected on a pair of free throws to give the Utes a one-point margin. Utah ended the first half with a 9-2 run to take a 35-31 lead heading into the break.
MSU opened the second half with a back-to-back buckets for a tied ball game. Utah found its groove in the third quarter for a 10-0 run to regain the lead. Potter opened the fourth quarter with five points for the Utes.
Utah continued with an offensive push with Potter shooting 4-of-5 from the floor while
Paige Crozon and Nawahine were perfect from the free-throw line.
The Utes travel to California to take on Fresno State Tuesday at 8 p.m. MT at the Save Mart Center.
