SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah women's basketball defeated the Hardrockers 96-42 in the Jon M. Huntsman Center Thursday afternoon in front of 1,185 South Lake City County elementary students.
All 11 Utes saw action in Thursday's exhibition game garnering 36 points from the bench with the team shot 50 percent from the floor.
"The point of an exhibition is to let everyone get their nerves out. It's kind of like a dress rehearsal," head coach
Lynne Roberts said." I always play everyone and give everyone a shot. It was a fun game. The team got to get up and down the court and run a little bit."
Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair leading the team scoring 26 points including 5-of-6 from the 3-point arch.
"That's really fun to see. She didn't shoot well from the 3-point last year and she worked really hard in the spring, summer and fall on her shooting. It's really fun to see that hard work pay off when players put the time in," Roberts said.
Utah open the game with a 10-0 run, spreading the scoring with four Utes connecting early against the Hardrockers. The Utes continued scoring shooting 48.6 percent from the floor while holding the Hardrockets to 6-28 from the floor.
Junior forward
Wendy Anae ended the first half of action with back-to-back buckets, giving Utah a 45-18 lead heading into the break.
The Hardrockers were the first on the board to open the second half with a pair of free-throws. Utah responded with a 12-0 run, taking a 59-20 lead over SD School of Mines and Technology. The Utes were perfect from the foul line shooting 15-15.
"That's great and if we make our free-throws it allows us to get into our presses. I think our pressing was effective tonight," Roberts said. "We weren't great in transition, but we were great in the half court when we called a set. We need to be able to execute during the flow of the game."
The Utah women's basketball team opens the 2016-17 season Nov. 12 at Jon M. Huntsman Center when the Utes host Montana State at 2 p.m.
