SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team improved to 10-0 after breaking open a close game in the second half and overpowering Weber State 71-52.
Junior forward
Emily Potter led the way with her fifth double-double of the season scoring 17 points and grabbing 18 rebounds along with four rebounds in just 23 minutes of play.
Utah's (10-0) defense held Weber State (4-6) to 27.9 percent shooting from the floor for four quarters. This marks the seventh game of the season Utah opponents have shot less than 34.9 percent from field-goal range.
"After the first quarter we were sputtering and couldn't get things going," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "We held Weber State to seven points so our defense was still there. We had much better intensity in the second half, but things weren't as fluid as we'd like.
"Overall, I think we're doing well. Looking at the minutes, you can see we have a deep bench. Nine people played double figure minutes and we are winning."
The Utes enter the game fifth in the nation in defensive rebounds pulling down 39 against the Wildcats for a team total of 56 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Erika Bean dished out 10 assists to her teammates as she sits second in the Pac-12 averaging 7.0 assists per game.
Junior forward
Wendy Anae connected on her first 3-pointer of the season as she went 4-5 on the day with six rebounds and two steals.
"I thought she (
Wendy Anae) was great.
Joeseta Fatuesi sat out with knee soreness so Wendy knew she needed to step up. She had been playing more of a backup role, but she knew she was it today and she did a great job. I thought she was really good and did a nice job coming in," Roberts said.
Senior forward
Paige Crozon saw her fourth consecutive double figure game pouring in 12 points including two 3-pointers. Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair also score in double figures with 10 points while pulling down six rebounds and dishing out three assists.
The speed of Bean and junior wing
Malia Nawahine couldn't be stifled by the Wildcats as Bean earned an assist on a Nawahine layup for the first points of the game. The Utes used a 12-0 run to pull ahead and lead 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Weber State opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to make it a two-possession ball game, before Nawahine found the bottom of the net for the Utes. The Wildcats continued to make their push, scoring back-to-back 3-pointers and tying the game 27-27, but Utah hung on for a 31-28 lead heading into the half time break.
Utah's defense held Weber State to five scoreless minutes in the third quarter as the Utes tamed the Wildcats on 2-14 in the third quarter for just seven points.
Utah's offense picked up in the fourth quarter with 27 points and no turnovers, while also staying controlled on the defensive end. The Utes grabbed 18 rebounds in the fourth quarter compared to Weber State's three, allowing no second chance opportunities for the Wildcats.
All 10 Utes who saw action against the Wildcats scored as junior wing
Tilar Clark knocked down a 3-pointer with 32 seconds to play for her lone shot of the game.
With the win, Utah completed an instate sweep after defeating Utah Valley, Southern Utah, Utah State and BYU/
