SALT LAKE CITY – Utah entered Saturday's game as the No. 5 team in the nation in rebounding and proved so against the Aggies grabbing 44 rebounds for 13 second chance points as the Utes defeated Utah State 65-58.
The University of Utah women's basketball team is off to the program's best start since the 2012-13 season with an undefeated mark of 7-0.
"We found a way to win and that's the important thing," head coach
Lynne Roberts said of her unbeaten squad. "I'm proud of the team for getting the offensive rebounds and getting to the foul line because that helped us win. We have all the pieces we have to continue to put it all together.
"You're going to have games like this one where you have some great shots, but can't get the ball to fall, but I'm looking forward to when we start clicking offensively a little more. That's what these non-conference games are for and we're figuring it out for conference. We continue to get better and find ways to win."
Senior wing
Paige Crozon led the Utes in scoring with 15 points while pulling down four rebounds. Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair scored 14 points with seven rebounds for the Utes as junior win
Malia Nawahine and junior forward
Emily Potter finished in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
"Paige had a good game for us. She struggled a little in the first half, but had key baskets for us in the second half. She was able to make a couple 3-pointers and get to the free-throw line and that's what we need from her," Roberts said about her only senior.
Utah State (6-2) paced the game early, opening with an 8-2 run shooting 54 percent and leading 13-7 at the first media timeout. The Utes saw their first lead of the game on a layup from freshman wing
Megan Jacobs off of an inbound play to go up 16-15 over the Aggies. The teams continued with back-and-forth action, but another layup from Jacobs gave Utah a 20-19 lead to end the first quarter.
Utah's second quarter defense held the Aggies to five minutes of scoreless action until freshman guard Eliza West knocked down one of two free-throws. The Utes out-rebounded the Aggies 25-15 in the first half as Utah picked up 11 second chance points for a 33-28 lead at the break.
"Defense is something we're always focused on," Boclair said. "It's always a priority. Playing with intensity and applying pressure in the full court were a few keys for today's game."
Junior wing
Malia Nawahine hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter to pace her way to 8 points in the period and a total for 12 on the day with seven rebounds. The Utes opened the final quarter with a steal from sophomore guard
Erika Bean who dished it off to Boclair for an assist and a basket.
The Utes hit the road to take on Nevada Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. MT in Reno, Nevada. Utah holds a 5-0 mark against the Wolf Pack.
