Opening statement
"It's been a good week as we got back late last night after a win over Nevada. Now we're 8-0 and excited about this weekend's game against BYU at home. It still feels like the season is just getting started even though we're almost a third of the way through. We're still a work in progress, but I'm proud of where we are at right now and I'm looking forward to Saturday."
Â
On introduction to BYU rivalry last year
"I'm from California and that's where I spent most of my career so I was in the West Coast Conference as a coach. I'm familiar with BYU, but I really didn't grasp this rivalry until I got to Utah. It's a fun rivalry and the players are excited. It certainly isn't as important as a Pac-12 game because it doesn't carry that kind of weight, but there's a community pride on the line. It's fun to be around this rivalry and we're excited to play."

On coaching in a rivalry game
"Last year was my first taste of the game so I watched the players because they had more experience in the rivalry than I did. I wanted to see if they treated it as any other game and they didn't. BYU got the better of us last year down in Provo. In terms of preparation and practice, it's all the same. That part is no different than any other game, but the team's attention to detail and the focus is ramped up. I haven't experienced a rivalry like this one as a player or a coach. The community involvement in this matchup isn't like anything I've experienced. You're either on one side of the fence or the other. The fans are committed. It makes it fun. I painted my mailbox red and I'm flanked by BYU fans, but it's all in good fun."Â

On clicking offensively
"I think we're still a work in progress. The last couple of games, before playing Nevada, we hadn't shot the ball tremendously well from outside. Tuesday night we went 7-21 from the 3-point arc, which isn't outstanding, but it's realistic. We can expect to go 7-21 every game and if we do that it opens up more. A few games before that, we were getting good shots, but we weren't hitting them. I told the team there's no formula for making baskets other than you have to be able to make baskets and we have players who can really shoot. That's part one. The second part is, are they great shots? That's the only formula. You have to be able to knock it down and it has to be a good shot. We have to be more conscious of taking great shots and if it's not, don't take it. We talked about giving up a good shot to create a great one for a teammate, which will help our shooting percentage. That's been better, but the turnovers have been two steps forward and one step back for us. We have two new point guards, more depth and more players playing significant minutes. I'm confident those will tapper."
Â
On recent defense
"Offensively, we've been a little inconsistent in terms of our shooting percentages, but defensively we've been really good. Entering our game against Nevada we were fourth in the country in field-goal percentage defense and first in the Pac-12. I'm proud of that and we tell our team that's where we can always be consistent. We can't always control if we're going to shoot great, how the games are going to be officiated or what the other team does, but you can control how you defend. The team as really bought into that and I think our depth plays a factor in that. We're able to play 11 people so we're able stay fresh and press. Our size makes a difference, obviously (Emily) Potter is 6-6 and that's a factor, but we have some great length everywhere on the perimeter.
Â
On keep 11 players in the rotation
"Right now it's working and everyone has a role and value on the court. When we get into Pac-12 play it might go down tow nine or 10, but we'll see. 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' and it's working right now."
Â
On game promotions
"If you wear red you get in free so of course, we're catering to our Utah fans with that. You can go online (
utahtickets.com) and get a free family pass, which allows up to six people per pass. We're anticipating a really good crowd and that's always exciting. There's also a Crimson Carnival before the game all around the Jon M. Huntsman Center concourse with different activities. We'll have face painting, balloons, a photo booth, games and crafts. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. so people will have an hour to walk around and see all the different activities before the game. I think it's going to be a great game for families and it should be a lot of fun."
