Utah Women's Basketball Press Conference
Head Coach Lynne Roberts
Opening statement:
"I'm glad that we're back home and it's nice to be playing at home this week. This has been a tough stretch. This is the teeth of our schedule in terms of conference play so it's nice to be back home. We have two really good teams coming in, as is the case for every conference game. Everybody is really good so we have Cal on Friday and then Stanford on Sunday. Our last two games at home [in the regular season] so there is some emotion that goes with that for our seniors. It's a really good Cal team. They're talented and young. They've had an up and down year, but they're certainly capable of beating anyone. It'll be a good weekend."
On the potential of Emily Potter:
"The sky is the limit for Potter. She has to continue to improve, want to get better and stay hungry. As I've shared, she's incredibly driven and motivated. She has to channel that and really work. We really didn't get an offseason with her because she was coming back off an injury of her ACL so this upcoming offseason will be huge. What she has accomplished this year in light of that is pretty dang impressive. Opposing teams are really keying on her and that's No. 1 on their defensive game plan, to try to slow her down and she's done a good job of handling that. She could be really, really good. She could get drafted [in the WNBA]. She has to get stronger and she knows that. There are a lot of things we can work on in the next two-and-a-half years to get her ready for that step. She's a talent."
On Tanaeya Boclair heading down the stretch after a nice outing at No. 8 Oregon State:
"Over the last two or three weeks, I've noticed a shift in her intensity and focus. She's playing with a little more drive right now, which is fun to see. She's still just a sophomore as well. The sophomore year is a tough one. During your freshman year, you can surprise people all season and anything you do is frosting on the cake. As sophomores, suddenly you have expectations and teams know how to scout and target any weaknesses that you may have, so sophomore year is a difficult year typically and 'Tay' has handled that. As of late, the one thing that I'm really relying on her for is that she has really become a great rebounding guard. She's really bought into that. It's difficult to keep her off the floor because she rebounds so dang hard. She's getting better defensively and we're figuring out ways to get her points. I'm proud of her. She's improving and that's what we keep talking about in our program. She's done a really nice job."
After winning at then-No. 21 California on Jan. 12, what will carry over this time around?:
"That game feels like a long time ago. I don't know that it helps us too much, in terms of pulling from it, other than that we know we can hang with them. We were down 19 and we should never have put ourselves in that situation to begin with. I'm sure [Cal is] looking at that game and thinking 'How did we let that one slip away? We should have beaten those guys.' I'm looking at that game and thinking how were we down 19. We shouldn't have been in that situation. Cal is a really good program. They have a ton of athletes. They are as athletic as anyone in the conference and have great size and length with probably the best freshman in the conference [Kristine Anigwe] and one of the best freshman in the country. We have our hands full. I'm sure they're ticked off with how we beat them at their place. If we take anything from that, it's that we better come into the game with a little of an edge and know that [Cal] is going to come in here looking to steal one back."
On expectations for home crowds of last two regular-season home games:
"Cal and Stanford are the last two home games [for the regular season] and the attendance has been getting better. As I've said, it's not where we want it to be ultimately, but it is getting better bit by bit in a slow boil. Internally, our people are working really hard to do that so one of the initiatives for Friday night's Cal game Girl Scout Night, which is great. All of the Girl Scouts who come to the game get a patch and I'm just hoping they bring the cookies as kind of a fair trade [tongue in cheek]. Shoutout for Thin Mints! [tongue in cheek]. That will be fun, but it is important that we get good crowds for these last two home games. For Senior Day against Stanford on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT, we get a chance to honor three great seniors. Crowds matter. They really do. We played at Oregon State [last Sunday] and they had a packed house so it really makes a difference. Our players have worked really hard this year, harder than they've ever worked, so I'd love to have a good home crowd for these last two games. It would really send our seniors off the right way."
On her senior group:
"We have Danielle Rodriguez, Katie Kuklok and Nakia Arquette. Those are our three seniors. They personify what I have said all season about how I was so fortunate to inherit really good kids, just great people. Those three are as good as it gets. They're all great students. Dani was named to the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team, Nakia is going to go on and join the Teach for America program and Katie volunteers her time at a dog shelter. These three are just quality people. That exemplifies what I've been saying in terms that I have great players and great people. We'll miss them. We really will. Dani has been the face of the program for a while. I always say I want the year to be for the seniors and to coach for them. This weekend is their weekend and I hope it's a positive one and one they remember."
On managing emotion on Senior Day:
"It's difficult. It doesn't matter who your senior are, where you're coaching or where you're at, it's always the same. It's tough for the players when you come out of the locker room with a game plan and then you have this emotional ceremony of saying goodbye to great players. It's hard, but it's part of it and you just have to trust that your players are dialed in. It's a time to honor those players. It's really important that they get that moment. You certainly don't want to sacrifice that in any way, but you just have to trust your team that when it's time to regroup get ready to go that they're ready to roll."
