SEATTLE -- Four Utes scored in double-digits against the Golden Bears, but the No. 7 seed University of Utah women's basketball team was edged in overtime by No. 10 seed California in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament on Thursday in KeyArena, 66-63.
In its first overtime game of the 2015-16 season, and just the second overtime contest in Pac-12 Tournament history, Utah (16-14) was led by Paige Crozon. The Humboldt, Saskatchewan native tied for team-high honors with 14 points and hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.
Redshirt sophomore forward Emily Potter tied Crozon for team-high honors with 14 points with a 7-of-12 shooting performances. She also had four rebounds to go with an assist, block and steal. Potter has scored in double-figures in 26 games in 2015-16 and 45 over her career. She has a school-record 74 blocks this season and 118 over her career, which is tied for sixth in school history.
Sophomore wing Malia Nawahine also scored 14 points, making 4-of-8 shots from the floor and a 2-for-2 effort from 3-point range, to go along with a pair of rebounds. She has 19 career double-figure scoring efforts and 11 times over her career.
Senior point guard Danielle Rodriguez contributed 11 points and dished out a game-high five assists to go along with a season-high-tying four steals. Rodriguez has reached double-digits for the fourth straight time, 16 times this season and 43 times in her career.
Sophomore wing Tanaeya Boclair added six points and six rebounds, while sophomore forward Joeseta Fatuesi hauled in five boards.
Down 4-2 early, Utah put together an 8-0 run to build a 10-4 advantage before the Golden Bears came back to tie the game for the third time at 13-13, which was also the score at the end of the first. Potter made three of five shots for six points, while Rodriguez scored four points. Boclair grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
The game would be tied three more times in the second quarter (15, 18 and 20) before the Utes would end the half on a 10-4 spurt to take a 30-24 lead into halftime. The Utes shot 53.8% (7-of-13) from the floor in the quarter with Rodriguez scoring five points and Crozon contributed four points.
Boclair opened the second half by knocking down a jumper off an in-bounds play and Utah would maintain its six-point advantage (32-26) and would lead by as many as 11 (45-34) in the third quarter before Cal managed to cut its deficit back down to six by the end of the frame (48-42). Potter and Nawahine paced the Ute attack with six points apiece in the third quarter.
Utah held an eight-point lead (52-44) early in the fourth quarter before Cal went on a 15-7 spurt to tie the game at 57-57 before the end of regulation. Nawahine continued her strong second half as she scored five points after making two of three field goal attempts. Crozon scored three points and hauled in four boards.
In the five-minute overtime session, the game was tied once more at 63-63 and the Utes received 3-pointers from Nawahine and Crozon, but could not hold on for the victory.
California (14-16) was led by a game-high 18 points from Kristine Anigwe.
