SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's tennis team heads to Ojai, Calif., this week for the 2016 Pac-12 Championships. The Utes, ranked No. 71 in the nation, will open with No. 37 Washington in a first-round match at 3 p.m. PT on Wednesday.
The Utes are 17-9, their most wins in a season since 1988 and the best total since the NCAA limited competition dates to 25.
"It is great to be back in Ojai for the Pac-12 Championships," head coach Roeland Brateanu said. We are fighting for our last chance to extend the season and we always have great battles with Washington. I expect another great match this time around."
THINGS TO KNOW
The Pac-12's eight men's teams are seeded based on won-lost percentages during regular-season conference play and the tournament will determine the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships. All rounds will be played at Libbey Park, with the championship match slated for Saturday at 6 p.m. PT.
On Wednesday, matches between the No. 5 and 8 seeds and no. 6 and 7 seeds will open the tournament. The winners of those respective matches will play the No. 3 and 4 seeds Thursday in the quarterfinals. The No. 1 and 2 seeds advance directly to the semifinal round on Friday.

UTAH NOTES
- Utah's top singles player, senior Matt Cowley is 11-10 on the season. The doubles pairing of Cowley and Dan Little moved up in the national rankings this week to No. 87 and are 7-4 on the season. Little is 8-8 in singles play, primarily at the No. 3 spot.
- Freddie McGeehan and Egbert Weverink are 5-4 this season in doubles play. Weverink was also 9-6 this season when paired with Santiago Sierra. The Dutch sophomore is 10-13 this season, mainly from the No. 4 singles position.
- David Micevski spent last week in the No. 2 singles spot and earned a victory over UA's Will Kneale. The Ute freshman was 7-4 at the No. 3 singles position this season.
- Jamey Swiggart is 10-6 during his senior season with the Utes with most matches at the No. 5 singles spot. He is also 11-10 in doubles matches, mostly at the No. 2 position
- His doubles teammate, Parker McGuiness is another Ute who has found success at the No. 5 spot, posting a record of 9-3
POSITIVE NOTE HEADING TO PAC-12'S
Utah sent itself into this week's Pac-12 Championships by winning the last match of the regular season, 6-1 at Arizona..
After capturing the doubles point, the Utes earned simultaneous singles wins to grab a 3-0 lead when David Micevski wrapped up a win over Will Kneale at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3, and Parker McGuiness rolled through Oliver Plaskett, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.
After UA grabbed a point, the Utes would crush any hopes of a comeback for the home team when Dan Little beat Jason Jaruvang at No. 3, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1. Utah capped the day with Egbert Weverink completing a victory against Trent Botha at No. 4 , 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 and Matt Cowley defeating nationally-ranked Naoki Takeda, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5.
LAST MEETING VS. UW
Earlier this season in Seattle, the Huskies escaped with a 4-3 win over the Utes. After gaining the doubles point, UW opened up a 2-0 lead after a win at the No. 4 singles position.
Utah got on the board when Parker McGuiness earned a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Sebastian Hawken. After Gal Hakak earned another point by beating Dan Little 6-2, 7-6, Jamey Swiggart kept the match alive with a three-set win over Piers Foley.
However, No. 84-ranked Mitch Stewart defeated Matt Cowley in three sets 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Huskies.
2015 PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Sixth-seeded Washington blanked the seventh-seeded Utes during the first round.
The Utes started the match with a valiant effort in doubles action as Jamey Swiggart and Parker McGuiness defeated Joao Barra and Vik Farkas at the No. 2 position. However, two setbacks earned UW the doubles point.
Matt Cowley was defeated by Emmett Egger at the No. 3 singles spot, 6-1, 6-4 and McGuiness then fell to Jake Douglas, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Freddie McGeehan suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Gal Hakak at the No. 4 spot, giving Washington the victory
