Four former University of Utah women's basketball players will represent their respective countries at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio Sat., Aug. 6 through Sat., Aug. 20. Kim (Smith) Gaucher, Michelle Plouffe and Shona Thorburn will play for Team Canada and Leilani Mitchell will compete for Australia.

The preliminary games of the tournament will be held at the Youth Arena in the Deodoro Olympic Park. Quarterfinal and medal games will be played at the Carioca Arena in the Barra Olympic Park. Â

Gaucher (née Smith), Thorburn and Plouffe will be making their second appearance in the Olympics after leading Canada to an eighth-place finish in 2012 in London, while this will be Mitchell's Olympic debut.

Canada will play in Group B with the United States, China, Serbia, Senegal and Spain. Australia has been assigned to Group A with Belarus, Brazil, France, Japan and Turkey. Four of the six teams in each group will advance to the elimination rounds beginning Tuesday, Aug. 16.

The Canadian women's national team won back-to-back gold medals in 2015, first at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, and then at the FIBA Americas Women's Championship in Edmonton to qualify for the Olympics in Rio.

The Canadians went 4-1 in a European exhibition series and earned a three-game sweep over China during the Edmonton Grads International Classic.

Australia secured five wins in its recent eight-game European tour. The Opals have won five consecutive medals in Olympic competition with bronze in 1996 followed by three straight silver medals in 2000, 2004 and 2008. They lost to the USA in the semifinals in 2012 before defeating Russia to claim the bronze medal.

In a final tune-up for the Olympics, both countries will participate in the USA Basketball Showcase July 28 through Aug. 1 along with France and the United States.

Gaucher (née Smith) is in her 15th year with the Canadian National Team. She has played professionally in Belgium, Spain, Hungary and most recently France along with three seasons in the WNBA (2006-08). The only women's basketball player in Utah history to have her number retired, Gaucher was a four-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and a third-team All-American as a senior after earning honorable mention honors the previous three seasons. She helped lead Utah to the Elite Eight as a senior in 2005-06.Â

In her one season at Utah in 2007-08 after transferring from Idaho, Mitchell earned honorable mention All-America honors and was one of three finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award as the nation's top point guard.
