SALT LAKE CITY – After a debut campaign under head coach
Lynne Roberts that saw the Utes qualify for the postseason for the first time in three years and double their win total from the previous season, the University of Utah women's basketball team is looking to build on its momentum this year as it announced its 2016-17 non-conference schedule on Monday. The Pac-12 Conference also released its base schedule for league play.
Â
The Utes' schedule features 16 home dates (plus one exhibition home game) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Â
"I am genuinely excited about the schedule we have in front of us," Roberts said. "Playing at home 17 times will be a great chance for us to improve on the momentum we built last season. The attendance and the atmosphere in the Huntsman Center improved throughout the year and we look forward to it getting even better this season. It really makes a difference for our players."
Â
Utah will have nine games against six opponents that reached the NCAA Tournament in 2015-16 during the upcoming regular season. Five of those teams are Pac-12 foes, including Final Four participants Oregon State and Washington, Sweet 16 qualifiers Stanford and UCLA along with Arizona State, who advanced to the second round.
Â
Five of Utah's non-conference matchups are against in-state foes. Utah is 156-48 (.765) all-time against the Beehive State opponents it will play this season, including an 81-14 (.853) mark versus those teams in the Huntsman Center.
"We aren't where we want to be as a program ultimately, as it's a continuing work in progress," Roberts said. "We will always take it one game at a time, but I really believe that we're headed in the right direction and I'm excited for this season."
After an exhibition contest against the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Salt Lake City at 11 a.m. MT on Thur., Nov. 3 for Future Scholars Field Trip Day, the Utes tip off their regular season against Montana State on Sat., Nov. 12 in a rematch of last season's WNIT First Round. Utah defeated MSU 95-61 in Salt Lake City and owns a 9-0 advantage in the all-time series.
Â
Utah opens its road schedule at Fresno State on Tue., Nov. 15. The Utes have a 13-3 edge in the all-time series against the Bulldogs, including a 78-63 home victory last season. Utah holds a 4-2 record at Fresno State with its last visit coming in 2007 (an 82-58 Utah victory).
Â
Utah returns to the Jon M. Huntsman Center to take on Utah Valley on Sat., Nov. 19 for its first in-state contest of the season. The Utes have a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series over the Wolverines with four of those victories coming at home.
Utah heads to Moraga, Calif., for a pair of games over the Thanksgiving holiday, first against Charlotte on Fri., Nov. 25 then St. Mary's on Sat., Nov. 26. The Utes
won their only other meeting with the 49ers back in 2014, a 54-52 decision in Salt Lake City. Utah holds a 6-0 lead over the Gaels, including a 3-0 edge in Moraga.Â
The home schedule resumes with back-to-back contests against Beehive State foes, starting Wed., Nov. 30 against Southern Utah and followed on Sat., Dec. 3 against Utah State. The Utes are 12-1 all-time against the T-Birds with a 9-1 record at home, and hold a 31-2 advantage over the Aggies, which includes a perfect 15-0 record in the Huntsman Center.
After a Tue., Dec. 6 game at Nevada, Utah concludes its non-conference slate with three consecutive home contests. The Utes host BYU in the Deseret First Duel on Sat., Dec. 10, Weber State on Sat., Dec. 17 and Northern Arizona on Wed., Dec. 21. Utah has a 63-39 edge over BYU (31-12 at home), a 45-6 lead over Weber State (22-1 at home) and a 7-0 all-time mark against Northern Arizona (4-0 at home).
"We want to do what we can to be as prepared as possible for conference play," Roberts said. "This schedule will put us in a good position to handle the rigors of the Pac-12, the toughest conference in the nation."
After being picked 11th in the 2015-16 preseason coaches poll, Utah earned a seventh-place finish with an 8-10 league mark in its first Pac-12 campaign under Roberts. Utah starts Pac-12 play this season during the week of Mon., Dec. 26 at UCLA and USC before a four-game home stretch where the Utes host Arizona State and Arizona (week of Mon., Jan. 2) followed by Stanford and California (week of Mon., Jan. 9).
"We know each game in our Pac-12 schedule will be extremely tough," Roberts said. "Everyone we face is very prepared, well coached, and extremely talented. There's a reason the conference was the best in the country last year and I only see it getting better. As a competitor, you always want to compete against the best, and the Pac12 provides that opportunity for all of us. It's going to be an exciting season in our conference."
A trip to Oregon State and Oregon on the week of Mon., Jan. 16 awaits Utah before a home-and-home series with Colorado on the week of Mon., Jan. 23.
Utah then hosts Washington and Washington State during the week of Mon., Jan. 30 followed by a Bay Area trip to play at California and Stanford on the week of Mon., Feb. 6.
The Utes round out their regular season home schedule the week of Mon., Feb. 13 against Oregon and Oregon State before closing out at Washington State and Washington during the week of Mon., Feb. 20.
The Pac-12 will announce exact dates and times for league games at a later date.
The Utes welcome four starters back from last season's squad who made 80 percent of the starts (132 of possible 165) and accounted for 65 percent of Utah's offense in 2015-16 (1,473 of 2,266 points). Junior
Emily Potter was an All-Pac-12 selection by both the league's coaches and media last season, while senior
Paige Crozon earned Pac-12 Honorable Mention.
