The Australian senior national women's basketball team, with former Utah point guard Leilani Mitchell, currently leads Group A at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio and maintained its perfect record in the tournament with victories over France and Japan this week.
Mitchell is averaging 8.5 points, 5.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds per contest so far in the tournament with a 52.4 shooting percentage from 3-point territory (11-of-21).
Team Canada (with former Utes Kim (Smith) Gaucher, Michelle Plouffe and Shona Thorburn) is second in Group B with a 3-1 mark in the tournament, behind only the United States. The Canadians split their last two games, defeating Senegal before suffering its first defeat to the USA.
(Smith) Gaucher is pulling 6.8 rebounds per game to go along with 5.5 points and 3.0 assists per contest during the tournament, while Thorburn is adding 2.5 points and 2.3 assists per game. Plouffe has appeared in three of the four contests. She hit her only 3-point field goal attempt of the tournament in the opener against China and handed out a pair of assists against the United State on Friday (Aug. 12).
Mitchell dished out five assists with three points in Australia's victory over the French on Tuesday.
Mitchell tied for the team lead with seven assists and poured in 18 points to go with six boards during the Aussies' win over the Japanese.
(Smith) Gaucher connected on three of her six shots for seven points and also grabbed six boards with a pair of assists in Canada's impressive win over Senegal. Thorburn chipped in three assists, while Plouffe scored a pair and was credited with an assist.
Against Team USA, (Smith) Gaucher turned in five points and five boards to go with a pair of steals. Thorburn scored three points and distributed two assists, while Plouffe dished out two assists.
Coming up next, Australia plays Belarus on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 12:15 p.m. MT before Canada takes on Spain Sunday, Aug. 14 at 5¬:45 p.m. MT.
