The Australian senior national women's basketball team, featuring former Utah point guard Leilani Mitchell, went 5-0 through pool play in Group A at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games. The Aussies maintained their perfect record in the tournament with a 74-66 win over Belarus last Saturday.
Mitchell is averaging 8.4 points, 4.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds per contest through five games in the tournament with a 54.2 shooting percentage from 3-point territory (13-of-24).
Team Canada (with former Utes Kim (Smith) Gaucher, Michelle Plouffe and Shona Thorburn) completed pool play in third place among Group B countries with a 3-2 mark in the tournament, behind the United States and Spain. The Canadians suffered a 73-60 setback to the Spaniards last Sunday
(Smith) Gaucher is pulling 6.2 rebounds per game to go along with 6.0 points and 2.4 assists per contest during the tournament. Thorburn is adding 2.0 points and 1.8 assists per game. Plouffe has appeared in three of the four contests. She hit her only 3-point field goal attempt of the tournament in the opener against China and handed out a pair of assists against the United State on Friday (Aug. 12).
Mitchell scored eight points and handed out three assists with three boards to help the Aussies to the win over Belarus to complete their 5-0 run through pool play.
(Smith) Gaucher knocked down three of six field goal attempts (3-of-4 from 2-point range) to tally seven points in addition to four rebounds and a steal against Spain.
The quarterfinals start Tuesday at the Carioca Arena with Australia facing Serbia at 8 a.m. MT before Canada takes on France at 7¬:15 p.m. MT.
