Four former University of Utah women's basketball players appeared in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio on Tuesday.
The Australian senior national women's basketball team, featuring former Utah point guard Leilani Mitchell, suffered its first defeat at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games, a 73-71 setback to Serbia. Mitchell scored 10 points, her third double-figure outing in six Olympic contests. She made two of three attempts from 3-point range and was 4-of-8 from the field overall. She also corraled five rebounds and dished out three assists.
For the tournament, Mitchell scored 8.7 points per game to go with 4.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds per contest through six contests.
Team Canada dropped a 68-63 decision to France in the quarterfinals, but Kim (Smith) Gaucher poured in a tournament-high 15 points after making six of 11 field goal attempts. She also gathered five rebounds. Shona Thorburn contributed a pair of rebounds.
Team Canada (with former Utes (Smith) Gaucher, Thorburn and Michelle Plouffe) finished the tournament with a 3-3 mark in the tournament.
(Smith) Gaucher pulled down 6.0 rebounds per game to go along with 7.5 points and 2.0 assists per contest during the tournament. Thorburn added 3.0 assists and 1.7 points per game. Plouffe appeared in three of the six contests. She hit her only 3-point field goal attempt of the tournament in the opener against China and handed out a pair of assists against the United States on Aug. 12.
