Day 14 Overview ...
• Live work in 11-on-11 'drive it' mode began from the offense's own 40-yard line during the media observation period.
• The 'thud drill' policy was instituted with the first contact above the shoulders being enough to rule a ball carrier down.
Media Observation Highlights ...
• Offensive lineman threw a pancake block in the open field.
• Wallace Gonzalez picked up a first down on a drag route.
• Leki Fotu wrapped up a Ute running back in the backfield for a TFL.
• Armand Shyne rushed for a nice gain up the middle.
From Coach Whittingham ...
On the feeling around this team during preseason: "They're very confident. They work hard. The work ethic has to match the confidence level, the swagger, I guess you could say. This team's work ethic is very good. It's one thing to talk the talk, but you have to walk the walk. So far, these guys have done that every practice."
On focus of final days of fall camp: "There's one day of camp left, but we still have two weeks until we play. Just because we break camp doesn't really signify anything other than that the work continues on Monday. What we have to do tomorrow is have another clean practice, which is what this morning was. Before we do that, we have to have another one this afternoon. We just have to keep getting better at everything. There is no glaring area of concern right now. We just have to continue to improve everything.
"Every position still needs to get work. That's an ongoing process that never ends, but what we need to have done is identify who will be in the mix this fall and who's maybe not quite ready to play."
On installing the offense: "The install is 95 percent done. It's never really completely done, you add little things throughout the year. Now on Monday, you pare it down. When you install, you install everything, but when you're playing a game you use about 60 percent of that every single week. We'll start to narrow that down on Monday and start getting ready for Southern Utah."
On Southern Utah: "They're a good football team. They are exceptionally well coached. They have a lot of good athletes. They had two or three [NFL] draft choices last year and word is they have a couple more on the team this year potentially. They'll have all of our attention without a doubt."
On Defensive Coordinator Morgan Scalley: "He's added a few new wrinkles scheme-wise. I don't want to give away the all of the details, but he's added a couple things. The most important thing is that we haven't missed a beat. He's picked up right where [former Defensive Coordinator] Coach [John] Pease left off. There's been no drop off in effort, intensity, focus and concentration. He has those guys playing hard and that's 90 percent of it. If you play hard and your players play for you, you have a chance. The vast majority of the battle is if they'll play for you.
"I'm thrilled that he's stayed here [Scalley has been on the Utah staff since 2006]. You want to hang on to your good people and he's really good. He's a Utah guy. His family is here, very similar to my situation. This is where his roots are and this where he wants to be."
On his development as a coach: "I hope I'm a better coach than when I first started. It's never a finished product, no matter what you coach or what position. There's always a better way to do things and certainly I'm still in that category and always will be. Hopefully, I'm a better coach now than when I first started."
On the contributions of walk-on players: "We couldn't do it without the walk-ons. They're vital to what we do. We couldn't practice properly. They play such an important role. We treat walk-ons around here with utmost respect. We award scholarships to a lot of walk-ons and it helps them understand that if they work hard and do things right there is light at the end of the tunnel."
Post-Practice Impressions from the Utah Assistant Coaches and Players ...
Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Aaron Roderick
On settling the depth chart: "We have a really good idea of which guys we're going to play. The exact rotations aren't set yet. There's still some competition at a couple of spots, but we have a good idea of who's going to be playing for us and who our top perimeter players are. Right now, we're trying to nail down which personnel groupings and which formations we're going to use to try to utilize those guys.
"With a new quarterback, it's nice to have Troy [Williams] take all of the reps with the 1s right now. He's gaining a lot of chemistry and timing with that group of offensive linemen and receivers. He's starting to settle in and take ownership of what we're doing. It's good for the players to know who's playing in which spots."
On Troy Williams: "He picked up right where he left off [from last spring's injury]. He's been very efficient. When people see him play, they'll be impressed. Mechanically, he's flawless. He does everything the way you'd want a quarterback to do it. His footwork and throwing motion is very nice. He's a very serious competitor and student of the game. He's worked so hard to learn our offense and to be ready for this opportunity. He has a great appreciation for what this opportunity means. After what he's been through at Washington and then transferring to a junior college, you can tell he's a guy who is really hungry. He doesn't ever crack a smile out here [on the practice field]. He's dead serious. He's all business. That sends a great message to his teammates that we have a lot to prove. He feels like he has a lot to prove and it's pretty fun to coach a guy like that."
Defensive Tackle Filipo Mokofisi
On Defensive Line Coach Lewis Powell: "We've become even closer than we were last year. I've known [Powell] since I was little, growing up in this program. He played with my cousin a long time ago. I see him as one of the boys as well as a coach. It's really cool that we go to him every day and just talk and have a closer relationship with a coach that you don't know as well."
On his rotation with Lowell Lotulelei and Pasoni Tasini: "It's really nice to get a breather every now and then, especially in practice. It's a great rotation."
On 1-on-1 pass rush drills against the offensive line: "[The offensive line] is amazing. I think these guys are one of the best groups in the conference by far. They've progressed so much as a unit since last year. They're working together a lot more. 1-on-1s are really helping us a lot."
On increasing sack numbers from last season: "We work a lot on pass rush moves and techniques. Coach Powell has been harping on that. We also need to be balanced in both the run and the pass."
On what he wanted to improve upon during the offseason: "I wanted to get better at my pass rush. [Coach Powell] is putting an emphasis on that. I need to get my pass rush up. A lot of times when I got tired in games last year, I just resorted to a bull rush. I need to get more moves into my arsenal and just keep working on that."
