SALT LAKE CITY – Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair scored 13 points in the third quarter, but the push wasn't enough for the Utes to overcome No. 19 Arizona State.
The Sun Devils (11-3, 2-1) picked up a 66-44 win as Utah (12-2, 1-2) saw its first home loss of the season.
"We just had a bad night and I don't know why. We were prepared and the team was ready and wanted to compete, and we were just off," head coach
Lynne Roberts stated. "We were missing shots we don't normally miss.
"Those type of things are contagious – making shots is contagious, missing them is too. You start to feel the pressure on yourself when you have the ball and that's not going to help you shoot well. We'll bounce back and we'll be alright."
Utah shot 12 percent from the floor in the first quarter and rallied with 58-percent shooting in the third quarter, but couldn't emerge from the early deficit.
Boclair tallied her 10th double figure scoring game of the season shooting 7-of-14 from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 from the foul line for a career-high 17 points. Boclair also grabbed six rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot against the Sun Devils.
"I'm really proud of her," Roberts said about Boclair "At timeouts she was positive and constructive, and really showed a lot of leadership and pose. She really showed up for us in that third quarter. She was really good and tough for us tonight."
Utah's leading scoring
Emily Potter was held to four points and six rebounds as she struggled from the floor early in the game.
"She's our leading scorer, she had shots rimming out and I'm sure that affected us," Roberts said. "I think we all expect her to make baskets because that's what she's been doing all season. She had an off game and that's bound to happen when you play 29 games a season."
The Sun Devils raced ahead in the first quarter by outscoring the Utes 22-5 and shooting 47.4 percent from the floor. Utah struggled on 2-of 17 shooting.
Arizona State opened on a 9-0 run as Utah missed its first four shot attempts, forcing Roberts to call a timeout for her team.
Utah put themselves on the board with a 3-pointer from senior wing
Paige Crozon out of the timeout and sophomore point guard
Erika Bean hit a jump shot with time winding down in the first quarter for the only two Utah baskets of the quarter.
The Utes were the first on the board to open the second quarter with back-to-back buckets from Bean and Potter, forcing ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne to take a timeout.
The Sun Devils faltered on their next two possessions before connecting on a drive from Reili Richardson for a 24-11 lead. The Utes saw their first foul shot attempts of the game with 4:10 to play in the first half as Crozon sunk 1-of-2.
ASU pulled ahead by 20 points for its largest lead of the half before ending the first half with the Utes trailing 34-15.
Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair scored the first six points for the Utes in the opening minutes of the second half, and continued with her push finishing with 13 points in the third quarter.
Emily Potter and
Kiana Moore also connected for the Utes to end the quarter down 51-32.
Utah competed all the way through the fourth quarter, despite the deficit, putting up 12 points, including 10 points inside the paint. The Utes were only outscored by three points in the second half, but the first quarter gap was too much for the team to make up.
"This was certainly a learning experience and we'll watch film and talk about it. You have no choice but to put this game behind you because we turn around and play Arizona, and that's kind of the beauty of it. We have a chance on Sunday to right the ship and be 2-2 in Pac-12 play. We'll be OK," Roberts reassured.
The Utes continue their homestand Sunday hosting Arizona at noon MT at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network and broadcast on ESPN 700 with Tyson Ewing.
This is the only macthup of the season for the Utes and Wildcats. The two teams faced off once last season as Utah defeated Arizona 60-55 on the road.
