SALT LAKE CITY – Three Utes finished in double figures, but it wasn't enough to overcome Arizona as the Wildcats defeated Utah 81-70 Sunday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (12-3, 1-3) opened the first quarter with a 6-point lead, but were outscored 20-11 by the Wildcats (10-5, 1-3) in the second quarter and weren't able to come back.
"Our attention to detail is poor right now and if you want to win in this conference it has to be great. Everyone has to do their part," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "We're not shooting the ball well – we missed 10 free-throws – and to me that's mental toughness. We need to toughen up. The cohesion, whether it's on offense or defense, is missing. These are good teams we're playing in the Pac-12 and we have to pay attention to the details."
Utah finished 2-of-6 on free-throws in the first half, with freshman
Kiana Moore connecting on her attempts, and 12-of-22 from the foul line throughout the game.
Utah out rebounded Arizona on the offensive board 21-12 with 16 second chance points compared to the Wildcat's 10 points.
Senior wing
Paige Crozon finished with 19 points to lead the Utes for her eighth game in double figures on the season. Crozon connected on three 3-pointers while pulling down four rebounds with one block and an assist.
"Paige is our best shooter and we talked about getting her the ball more in transition, and we did that today," Roberts said. "She was a lot more aggressive in looking for her shot, which is good, we need that from her."
Junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair, who is averaging in double figures in Pac-12 games, finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Junior forward
Emily Potter finished with 12 points for her 14th game in double figures and just one rebound shy of her seventh double-double.
Wendy Anae matched her career-high with nine points while also grabbing seven rebounds and one steal.
Sophomore guard
Erika Bean looked up to see junior wing
Malia Nawahine running to the basket and launched the ball for a layup from Nawahine and the first points of the ball game. The Utes continued their momentum to pull out to a 10-4 lead.
Threes were flying on both ends of the floor with each team picking up two 3-pointers before the first media timeout as the Utes held a 16-14 edge. Out of the timeout Arizona's Taryn Griffey hit an and-one opportunity to climb within one, but freshman guard
Kiana Moore drove to the basket to extend the Utah lead.
Arizona claimed the lead on a pair of made free-throws from Griffey, 19-18 with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter. The Utes reclaimed on the lead as Bean found
Daneesha Provo under the basket. Both teams remain scoreless for the final 2:28 of the quarter as the Utes led 20-19.
Arizona was first on the board in the second quarter for another lead change, but Crozon knocked down her second 3-pointer of the game for a 23-20 Utah lead. Arizona found themselves on a 9-0 run as Utah struggled to connect for an 0-for-6 scoring drought. Crozon broke the skid for the Utes on a short jumper to cut into the Wildcat lead, 32-27.
Arizona got out to a 10-point lead on a basket from Dejza James and
Wendy Anae scored with just 9.8 left on the clock to end the first half trailing 39-31.
The first half saw five lead changes and three ties as the visiting Wildcats shot 45.7 percent from the floor compared to Utah's 38.2-percent shooting. Crozon finished the first 20 minutes of action with 10 points as the only player of the game to end the half in double figures.
Arizona picked up the first two baskets of the half before Potter grabbed an offensive rebound and a basket. The Wildcats pulled out to a 15-point lead in the third quarter, but Utah connected on four free-throws – two from Boclair and two from Nawahine - and a layup from Anae to make it a single-digit lead for Arizona, 54-45.
Arizona continued to connect shooting 64.7 percent from the floor, outscoring the Utes 27-21 in the third quarter including nine points from LaBrittney Jones for a 66-52 lead at the end of the third quarter, 66-52.
Utah outscored the Wildcats 18-15 in the fourth quarter, but Arizona's lead was too much for the Utes. Crozon tallied seven points in the final quarter on two field goals, two free-throws and a 3-pointer to finish with a season-high 19 points.
"We need to play better and fix the things we work on. That will show me if we're resilient, and I believe we are. We hadn't faced adversity yet and this will be a good test for us," Roberts stated about her team bouncing back.
Utah continues its homestand with more Pac-12 action hosting No. 10 Stanford Friday at 6 p.m. MT and No. 20 California Sunday at noon MT at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Both matchups will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
The Utes have yet to see the win column against Stanford in program history while winning two if the last three contests against California.
