OGDEN, Utah – The University of Utah women's basketball program dominated its third game of the season, taking down Weber State 85-58 on the road. The Utes are 2-1 this season.
"I am pleased to get the win because I knew that Weber State would come ready to play," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "They played with a unique defense where they were sagging so it was tempting to not shoot every time you were open. We shot the ball well. The bench came out and played well and our minutes were balanced so that was good."
Megan Huff led the Utes with 20 points (7-for-9) with
Erika Bean adding a career-high 15 and Tilar Clark chipping in 10.
Daneesha Provo and
Tanaeya BoClair both came off the bench to also score in double figures, adding 13 and 12 points, respectively.
"I think our bench was key for us tonight because we wanted to come out and play up tempo and get after it a little bit," Roberts said. "You have to have depth to be able to do that and the bench has to be able to produce. Daneesha has been the most consistent off the bench and I think Tanaeya did well off the bench tonight and is such a calming presence for us."
The Wildcats came out hot from the arc with three of their first four shots coming from deep to take an 11-8 lead with 6:34 left to play in the first quarter. The Utes had an answer, going on a 14-3 run sparked in large part by two key threes from Bean to take an 19-11 lead with less than four minutes to go.
The Utes entered the second quarter up 23-16 and continued to stay aggressive in the lane and on the perimeter with Huff scoring six of Utah's first eight points of the quarter on free throws, a layup and a three-pointer. Utah led by 14 after Bean hit her third three-pointer of the game with the Utes eventually heading into halftime up 42-29 after holding the Wildcats to just 30-percent shooting in the second quarter.
Back-to-back threes from Tilar Clark quickly put the Utes up by 19 points in the third quarter which turned into an 12-0 run by Utah to take a 54-31 lead with 3:59 remaining. Utah held Weber State scoreless for over six minutes of the third quarter before they were able to put one in at the 3:03 mark before Megan Jacobs drained a three to put the Utes up 26 with less than three minutes to play.
Utah kept its 26-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but had some shooting woes that allowed the Wildcats to make it 77-54 with less than two minutes to play. The Utah defense didn't falter though, holding Weber State without points for over two minutes, eventually sealing the
