Washington Edges Utah On Final Play, 33-30

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Utah football team fell in the final seconds of the game at Washington as the Huskies scored a 38-yard field goal, giving Washington the 33-30 win. Utah is 5-6 overall and 2-6 in Pac-12 play.

Utah scored 13 unanswered points starting in the third quarter to take a 23-16 lead, but it quickly turned into a fourth quarter shootout as the game was tied twice before the Huskies were able to convert on its second field goal of the game for the win.

Tyler Huntley finished the game 19-of-27 for 293 yards (2 TD, 1 INT), adding 48 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Raelon Singleton turned in his second straight game with 80-plus yards, pulling in 81 yards on five catches and two scores.

On defense, Terrell Burgess racked up a career-high eight stops with Kavika Luafatasaga and Jaylon Johnson turning in six tackles each. Matt Gay scored three field goals (28, 44, 25) on special teams with Mitch Wishnowsky coming up big with an onside kick recovery, fake punt rush and four punts for 165 yards (41.2 yards per punt).

It was the Huskies who jumped on the board first on a nine-yard rush from Myles Gaskin with 7:11 left on the clock in the first quarter, but was unable to convert on the PAT, only taking a 6-0 lead. The scoring drive took 3:43 off the clock for seven plays and 32 yards.

The missed PAT gave the Utes the opportunity to take the lead and they seized the moment with 3:04 left to play in the first quarter. Huntley linked up with Singleton over the middle with the Crosby, Texas native breaking a tackle to score the 40-yard touchdown and give Utah a 7-6 advantage. It was the end of a nine-play, 79-yard drive that burned 4:00 off the clock.

After lining up for the kickoff, the Utes caught the Huskies by surprise when they attempted an onside kick with Wishnowsky recovering his own kick and giving Utah the ball back on their own 48-yard-line. It set up Utah's next points with Gay knocking in a 28-yard field goal to start the second quarter to give Utah a 10-6 lead, ending a 42-yard drive for 10 plays and 5:16 off the clock.

The early shootout continued when Washington regained the lead at the 9:45 mark in the second quarter. The Huskies scored on a six-yard receiving touchdown after driving 65 yards down field, giving them a 13-10 lead.

The Huskies had to settle on a field goal after the Utes stopped Washington on a 3rd-and-8. Washington hit a 34-yarder with 1:58 left to play in the second quarter to make it 16-10, putting an end to a seven-play, 34-yard drive.

The Utes were able to make it a three-point game heading into halftime with Gay kicking his second field goal of the game. Gay's 44-yarder came on the back end of an eight-play, 49-yard drive that took the final 1:58 off the clock in the second quarter.

Utah opened scoring in the third quarter with Gay's third field goal of the game as he hit a 25-yarder to tie the game 16-16 with 11:33 on the clock. The field goal was set up by an outstanding 31-yard catch by Demari Simpkins to put the Utes in Washington territory. The drive lasted 3:27 for eight plays and 59 yards.

With 1:37 left in the third it was Singleton's second touchdown of the game that put Utah back up 23-16. Singleton brought down an 11-yard reception on a fade pass in the corner of the end zone, giving the Utes the lead on the end of a 10-play, 80-yard drive that burned 5:05 off the clock.

The lead didn't last long with Washington scoring on a 76-yard reception by Gaskin with just 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter. It tied the score 23-23 to head into the final quarter of the game.

The Utes had an answer to start the fourth quarter after a fake punt turned into a 19-yard run by Wishnowsky for a first down to the Utah 31-yard-line. Huntley then found tight end Jake Jackson open down field for a diving 39-yard catch to put the Utes in the red zone. It was Huntley who punched in the five-yard rushing touchdown on the next play, making it 30-23 in Utah's favor.

Donavan Thompson and Filipo Mokofisi came up with a huge stop on a fourth down rush by Jake Browning with less than five minutes to play, but the Huskies got the ball back after the Utes were forced to punt with three minutes remaining in the game.
