LOGAN, Utah – The University of Utah women's basketball team posted a 79-44 win on the road against Utah State on Monday night, improving to 8-2 on the season.
Tilar Clark, who began her collegiate career at Utah State, led the Utes in scoring with 17 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field while adding five rebounds.
Emily Potter chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds with
Megan Huff (15 points) and
Tori Williams (10 points) rounding out Utah's double-digit scorers.
"We have talked as a team about playing a full 40 minutes and I felt we did that tonight," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "We had four players in double figures with strong shooting across the board and our defense was locked in for four quarters."
It was a back-and-forth scoring affair to start the first quarter, but Huff sparked a 10-0 run for the Utes with five straight points, giving Utah a 13-4 lead with 5:29 on the clock. Another run (8-0) gave Utah a 16-point lead with just a minute to play in the first quarter, eventually sending the Utes into the second quarter with a 26-13 advantage.
The Utes started slow in the second quarter, allowing Utah State to cut the lead to just nine points with 5:51 left to play on a 6-2 run. It didn't take long for Utah to answer with a run of its own, going on a 7-0 run to send them into halftime up 42-26, holding Utah State scoreless for the final 3:32 of the quarter.
Utah held Utah State to just 11-percent from the arc in the first half while shooting 46-percent from the three and 48-percent from the floor themselves. The Utes also forced nine turnovers in the first half, scoring nine points off the Aggie mistakes.
Potter was able to extend the Utah lead to 18 points early in the third quarter with back-to-back open buckets to make it 46-28. The Aggies were able to make it a 14-point game with 7:58 on the clock, but Utah got its offensive and defensive rhythm back late in the quarter when they went on a 7-0 run, holding Utah State from scoring a single point for the last 4:32 of the quarter.
Utah opened the fourth and final quarter of the game with a 25-point lead, extending its run from the end of the third quarter after Clark scored five unanswered points to give them a 60-35 lead. Even with the large lead, it was the Utah defense that continued to shine down the stretch, keeping Utah State without a field goal for the final 5:41 of the game, giving them the 79-44 win on the road.
"It was great to see the team focused in the second half by taking care of the ball and making smart plays off the ball," Roberts said. "This was a great road win and I'm proud of this group."
Utah returns to action for its final non-conference game of the season when they host Oral Roberts University on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m.
