SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball program wrapped up non-conference play today with a 71-50 win over Oral Roberts University, improving to 9-2 overall this season.
Utah shot 44-percent from the field for the game, the second game in a row and the eighth time in the last nine that the Utes have shot 40-percent or higher. Along with strong shooting, the Utah defense continued to be a mainstay for the program, forcing 13 turnovers while only committing eight themselves.
"I don't think the score was indicative of how we controlled the game," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "We had four turnovers in the first quarter, but then we only had four the rest of the game. We only fouled once in the first half, but did a pretty good job and had a balanced game to finish 9-2."
It was another balanced attack for the Utes with nine players scoring against the Golden Eagles, led by senior
Emily Potter with 13 points. She added nine rebounds and a season-high four blocks.
Daneesha Provo reached double figures for the seventh time this season, scoring 10.
Tanaeya BoClair added nine points off the bench with
Tilar Clark tossing in eight points and a season-high seven rebounds.
The Utes controlled the entire game, but got off to a rocky start in the first quarter, shooting just 25-percent from the floor. Despite the poor shooting, the Utes held ORU scoreless until the 4:52 mark of the first quarter. After gaining some confidence, Provo was able to score five unanswered points with less than a minute to play to send Utah into the second quarter up 16-10.
ORU came out of the gate firing in the second quarter, cutting the Utah lead to just one-point with 7:36 on the clock, but
Megan Jacobs had an answer, draining her fifth three-pointer of the season to make it 20-16. The Utes forced five turnovers in the second quarter and were able to take off on a 9-0 run that included Potter's first-career three-pointer to give Utah a 35-20 lead heading into halftime.
The Utes scored the first seven points of the third quarter, extending its second quarter run to make it 42-20 on a
Megan Huff layup at the 7:42 mark. Clark scored all eight of her points in the third quarter, shooting 3-for-4 from the floor, helping the Utes to take a 29-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Utah jumped out to its largest lead of the game (31 points) early in the fourth quarter, but struggled offensively the rest of the way. But with the large lead, the Utah defense was able to stand strong, scoring six points off turnovers to eventually claim the 71-50 win.
"I think last year heading into Pac-12 play, we had a false sense of security," Roberts said. "We've beat some good teams this year and so I think this team has a real sense of their identity and last year I don't think I could have said that. I get the sense that this team wants to keep getting better."
The Utes will return to action when they open Pac-12 play at home on Dec. 29 against Arizona. The game is set for a 6 p.m. tip in the Huntsman Center.
