SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team opened Pac-12 Conference play with an 89-55 win over the Arizona Wildcats on Friday night, improving to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
It was a strong game for the Utes from start to finish, shooting 48-percent from the floor while holding Arizona to just 32-percent shooting. Utah outrebounded the Wildcats 54-27 and outscored them 50-20 in the paint.
"I thought it was a good win," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "Anytime you can win convincingly in the Pac-12 no matter what the situation is, is a good win. I thought we controlled the game for the most part."
Leading the Utes against the Wildcats was junior
Daneesha Provo who scored a career-high 24 points (9-for-19).
Megan Huff finished the game with her third double-double of the season with 14 points (6-for-7) and 13 rebounds while
Emily Potter chipped in 14 points (7-for-10), adding nine boards and two blocks.
"We had really good first and third quarters," Roberts said. "We had 24 offensive rebounds, which is impressive. We held them to three assists. We talked about being the more aggressive team, and I felt we were."
The Utes came out of the gate firing in the first quarter, taking an 11-0 lead, holding Arizona scoreless until the 5:24 mark. Provo scored nine of her 24 points in the first quarter with the Utes shooting 66-percent from the floor and 50-percent from the arc to go into the second quarter up 27-14.
Utah opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run, capped off by a strong layup by Potter to make it 35-16 with 6:24 on the clock. Arizona made it a 15-point game late in the quarter, but
Tilar Clark was able to five points in the last minute of the quarter to make it 49-31 heading into halftime.
It was another run that sparked the Utes to start the third quarter, scoring seven unanswered points, giving Utah a 56-33 advantage with 7:20 remaining. Provo added another 11 points in the third with Huff dominating the glass with seven of her 13 rebounds, including five offensively.
Utah's defense stayed stingy in the fourth quarter, only allowing Arizona to shoot 26-percent from the floor and outrebounding them 16-8. The Utes took its largest lead of the game with 4:51 on the clock when Huff drained a three-pointer to make it a 37-point game. It was too much for the Wildcats to overcome with the Utes walking away with its 89-55 win.
Utah will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 31 when they host the Arizona State Sun Devils at noon. The game is set for a 12 p.m. tip in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
